Marseille 1-0 Valencia: Hatem Ben Arfa Helps OM Win Robert-Louis Dreyfus Trophy
The French champions have walked away with a win against Los Che.
By Rick D'Andrea
A single goal from striker Hatem Ben Arfa has given Marseille a 1-0 victory over Valencia in the first-ever Robert-Loius Dreyfus Trophy contest.
OM had imposed themselves on the match, dominating proceedings for large periods at a time, which meant Los Che had to soak up pressure.
The first real chance of the match fell to the away side after 21 minutes, when Pablo Hernandez combined with Sofiane Feghouli in the six-yard box, but could only squander his opportunity onto the left post.
Brandao then had three separate chances in the 23rd, 30th and 35th minutes to give the French champions the lead, but Valencia goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez was good enough on all three occasions to keep out the Brazilian.
After half-time, OM kept up the pressure on the Spanish giants, with Brandao again in the thick of it. He was unable to beat Sanchez again in the 69th minute, seeing his g-range shot parried out of play.
Four minutes later, new Valencia signing Roberto Soldado had a good chance to take an unexpected lead, but his shot on goal was saved by Steve Mandanda.
With 12 minutes to go, the deadlock was finally broken when Hatem Ben Afra scored the one and only goal in the match. Coming on as a substitute on the hour mark, the French international calmly slotted the ball past Sanchez, but did not celebrate.
