Craig Gordon Flop of the Match

Had watched a couple of wayward shots fly over his crossbar before a shocking piece of goalkeeping saw the ball bounce through his legs as Dawson levelled the score.

  • Nedum Onuoha

    Nedum Onuoha

Solid if uninspiring from the on loan full-back. Didn't get forward well enough for his side, who at times lacked width down the right-hand side.

  • Titus Bramble

    Titus Bramble

A more composed presence than the more physical Mensah, but an equally effective display. Good positioning and managed to get a fair share of interceptions.

  • John Mensah

    3.50

    John Mensah

Looked a little off the pace in the opening stages and an early mistake almost allowed Defoe a chance at goal. Firmed up as the game went on and dominated Defoe, putting in some hefty but well-timed challenges.

  • Phil Bardsley

    Phil Bardsley

Another battling performance from the converted left-back. Had a shot from distance that zipped over the bar but was caught out of position as Sandro raced down the right flank for the second goal.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon

    Stéphane Sessegnon

Has a bag full of tricks that he isn't afraid to show off. Threw a leg out at a Malbranque in the first half that nearly found the bottom corner. Saw a lot of the ball and although he was always positive, he didn't test Assou-Ekotto down the outside enough.

  • Kieran Richardson

    Kieran Richardson

Some nice footwork and is clearly enjoying his role in behind Gyan, their movement troubled the Tottenham defence. His drilled cross found Gyan for the opener. Hit the bar with a late snapshot.

  • Sulley Ali Muntari

    Sulley Ali Muntari

A calming influence that sat in front of his defence, anchored the midfield well but is also able to pick a pass. Could also be blamed for allowing Sandro to get forward in the build up to Tottenham's second goal.

  • Jordan Henderson
    1
    5
    3.00

    Jordan Henderson

An energetic showing form the young Englishman, popped up all over the field for his side and always looking for a progressive pass.

  • Steed Malbranque

    3.00

    Steed Malbranque

Didn't have the pace to trouble Corluka and wasn't as influential as he can be when in possession. All in all, a relatively quiet game from the Frenchman. Replaced by Elmohamady with time running out.

  • Asamoah Gyan

    Asamoah Gyan

Lovely turn and hit to give Sunderland an early lead, hammering home past the helpless Gomes. Was constantly on the move as he dropped off on both flanks to help build attacks. Was feeding on scraps at times in the second half.

    A late introduction for Onuoha.

  • Ahmed El Mohamady

    Ahmed El Mohamady

On for Malbranque with 15 minutes to go but struggled to get onto the ball.

  • Gomes

    3.00

    Gomes

Couldn't be blamed for the opening goal as Gyan smashed it beyond him and into the bottom corner. Guilty of a shameful piece of play acting as Gyan challenged him for a high ball.

  • Benoit Assou-Ekotto

    3.00

    Benoit Assou-Ekotto

At times was troubled by the trickery of Sessegnon, but it was telling that the Benin international didn't get in behind him at all throughout the game.

  • William Gallas
    16

    3.50

    William Gallas

Highly competant from the former Arsenal man. Didn't put a foot wrong as he went about his task with an accomplished focus.

  • Michael Dawson
    17

    3.00

    Michael Dawson

The good, the bad and the ugly from Dawson. Completely lost Gyan for the first goal of the game, allowing the Ghanaian far too much time to turn and get his shot off. Some of his distribution from the back was shocking but he hauled his side back into the game with a powerful header at the end of the first half which bounced through the legs of Gordon.

  • Vedran Corluka
    35

    3.00

    Vedran Corluka

Stood up well to Malbranque and limited attacks down the left flank. Had the Sunderland ffans screaming for a penalty as he blocked a Richardson cross with his hand but in truth his arms were down by his side and it was too close range to be considered an infringement.

  • Niko Kranjcar

Niko Kranjcar Top of the Match

Some inventive play from the Croatian midfielder, drifted inside to good effect. Superb strike to give his side the lead in the second half, thundered it beyond Gordon into the borrom left-hand corner.

  • Sandro
    26
    2
    3.50

    Sandro

Marauding burst forward in the second half resulted in his side taking the lead. A strong presence at the heart of the Spurs midfield that shielded his back four from pressure.

  • Jermaine Jenas

    6
    2.50

    Jermaine Jenas

Had an early chance at goal which he stabbed over the crossbar but didn't build on this early promise and faded from the game. Had a good opportunity direct from a free-kick that he wasted.

  • Steven Pienaar
    16
    5
    3.50

    Steven Pienaar

Had a very quiet first half but burst into life for the second, his movement and direct play caused the Sunderland defence all sorts of problems. Replaced by Lennon in the closing stages.

  • Roman Pavlyuchenko

    Roman Pavlyuchenko

Did well to burst into space in the left-hand side of the box but somewhat thrashed at his shot as he sent it sailing over at the near post. A peripheral figure at times.

  • Jermain Defoe
    6
    6
    3.00

    Jermain Defoe

Was a willing runner for his side, charging down the channels at every given opportunity but was closely guarded by Mensah and the Ghanaian got the best of their exchanges. Taken off in the closing minutes.
