Shamrock Rovers 0-2 Juventus: Amauri Brace Outclasses Irish Determination
The Bianconeri will take a two-goal lead into the second leg.
By Rick D'Andrea
Italian giants Juventus will take a two-goal advantage going into the second leg of their Europa League third round qualifying leg after defeating Shamrock Rovers 2-0 at the Tallaght Stadium, Dublin.
Coach Luigi Del Neri fielded a full-strength squad, using the likes of Diego, Amauri, Giorgio Chiellini and Claudio Marchisio, but also new signings Davide Lanzafame, Marco Motta, Leonardo Bonucci, Marco Storari and Simone Pepe.
The Bianconeri took an early lead on three minutes. Working the ball around, striker Amauri was allowed space to run onto the ball, whose deft touch with his left foot was able put to the ball past goalkeeper Alan Mannus to make it 1-0.
Dan Murray had a brilliant chance to equalize, after Shamrock earnt a corner two minutes later. The ball was flicked onto the back post, with the ball then falling to the defender, but he was unable to fire a shot on goal.
Pepe had an opportunity to double the lead on 15 minutes from a Diego free-kick, but he could not direct his header on target.
On the half-hour mark, Diego showed some superb skill, as he skipped around the Hoops defense. Laying a pass off for Lanzafame, the former Parma player's first-time almost took a wicked deflection, forcing Mannus to make a last-ditch diving save, preventing the ball from going into the back of the net.
Tempers frayed five minutes from the half-time break, after Pepe uncharacteristically fouled Kris Turner from behind. The Bianconeri players were not pleased that the home side did not return the ball in a show of good sportsmanship.
The second half almost started like the first, with Amauri having a chance to score his second goal of the game, but Murray was on hand to stifle the Brazilian-born player's shot.
On 52 minutes, it was Murray again who almost equalized. Thomas Stewart delivered a lovely ball from the left and the defender rose above the Juventus pack, but he could not direct his header on target, flashing it just wide of the post.
The post came to Shamrock's rescue on 59 minutes, as Amauri received a long ball down the middle. Fending off a defender, the attacker delicately tapped the ball past Mannus, but the woodwork saved the home side from having a two-goal lead.
Claudio Marchisio's first touch almost saw the midfielder score with 20 minutes to go. Amauri won a loose ball and marched forward along the left flank. Seeing the Italian international in the center, Amauri threaded a pass for Marchisio, but he could not finish off the move.
And Amauri's second goal finally came on 75 minutes, as Marco Motta was allowed to put a cross in from the right, and the striker rose above the pack, heading the ball home off the post, leaving Mannus with no chance.
Robert Bayly had a good opportunity to pull one back for the Hoops, as striker Gary Twigg cut a pass back for the midfielder, but his volley was high and wide.
Amauri was eager in wanting his hat-trick, and almost had it with seven minutes to go. Skipping past two defenders, the forward blasted a shot, going over the bar.
A counterattacking move was almost finished off by Del Piero on 86 minutes, after Mohamed Sissoko won a loose ball in defense. Advancing forward, the Mali international combined with Pepe, who tried to twist and turn his way through the Shamrock Rovers defense. Seeing the former Italian international to his left, he laid a pass off for the Juventus legend, who managed to miss by a whisker.
