Sevilla 0-0 Malaga: Honours Even In Dull Andalucian Derby
The points were shared in a match where neither side looked likely to break the deadlock...
By Paul Macdonald
Sevilla and Malaga had to settle for a share of the points at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan this afternoon in what proved to be an Andalucian derby lacking in incident.
Luis Fabiano and Frederic Kanoute both came close for the home side but were unable to find the target, and in the end a draw was a fair outcome from what was a match low on quality.
The atmosphere was vibrant inside the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, with the hosts desperate for the points to improve their fading Champions League hopes, while the visitors were looking for a precious win in their battle against relegation.
Malaga’s suffered a blow early on, however, when on-loan goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo was forced to leave the pitch through injury after just five minutes, to be replaced by Francesc Arnau.
Both sides struggled to create chances throughout much of the encounter, however, with Luis Fabiano’s close range header that Arnau pushed to safety the best opening of the first half.
Sevilla continued to do the majority of the pressing, edging La Liga’s bottom club deep into their own territory, but again efforts on goal were at a premium.
Frederic Kanoute was thrown into the action in order to give Los Nervionenses more attacking verve, and he squandered the best opportunity, heading over from inside the six yard box when he should have hit the target.
Diego Perotti then cut inside and curled a shot over the crossbar, but that was as good as it got in terms of goalmouth incident, and Malaga will be the happier of the two sides with the final result, while Sevilla will view this result as two points dropped, with their top four hopes fading fast.
