David de Gea
Had a number of routine saves to make, the best of them forcing a header from Toquero over the bar in the 29th minute. Watched Llorente slide his penalty wide of his right post.
Got forward down the left wing to good effect and his crosses gave Bilbao's defenders problems. Attacking wasn't reduced in the second-half following the sending off, acting almost as a midfielder. Sacrificed for Juanfran after going two behind.
Lost his marker too often and allowed Bilbao to work shooting chances. However, showed muscle on Llorente in the air and prevented the target man from winning too many headers. Distribution from the back was good.
Did well against Llorente until he brought the striker down in the box for a penalty. Sent off and made the evening all the more difficult for his side. Perhaps a shade unlucky to receive his marching orders.
Slightly wasteful on the ball at times but defended well and provided Aguero with a cross which he should have buried in the 22nd minute. Booked.
Kept the ball well and spread the play with every opportunity. One super pass to Filipe in the sixth minute almost opened up Bilbao.
José Antonio Reyes
The man who looked like he could turn the game back in Atletico's favor. His running was endless but the final product was lacking. Almost found Aguero after an exciting run in the 51st minute.
Almost got on the end of a Tiago cross in the 25th minute. Still trying to settle into his new club. Replaced at half-time.
The Portuguese international tried his best to keep his side moving forward but just couldn't find a key ball, coming close with a crossed pass in the first 45.
Missed a one-on-one in the 43rd minute that you would have bet your house on the Uruguayan finding the net with. Saw his best efforts from distance turned over and away. His usual influence in Atletico's build-up play was lacking.
A frustrating night for Kun Aguero, the striker should have scored a header in the 20th minute and came close on a number of other tries but just couldn't find the net on a disappointing night all round.
The keeper was quick off his line to deny Aguero in the 20th minute and had a solid evening between the sticks, preventing anything Madrid could throw his way.
Shadowed both Forlan and Aguero as the two rotated in the more advanced role and did a sound job for the most part. Relied on his keeper and the poor finishing of the Atleti attack to spare him twice.
Provided both assists for Toquero and did a fine job down the right against a tricky Filipe.
Booked for a nasty challenge on Aguero. Used the few times he got forward down the left well, supplying Llorente with a cross he should have finished. Found keeping tabs on Reyes a difficult prospect on a yellow card.
Tested De Gea with an early shot in the 4th minute. A lively performance from the dynamic midfielder who has been in fine form of late. Booked for a tackle on Reyes.
The captain kept things tight against Tiago and ran the threat of Elias out with some tight shielding. Replaced in the second-half for the more defensive Orbaiz.
A threat with his deliveries and passing, almost got on the scoresheet himself as Atleti left further gaps at the back. Played a wonderful ball Llorente flicked on to Toquero (29th minute).
Occasionally allowed his man to drift from his side but did a fine job against Aguero and Forlan.
Stole in with two very important goals for Bilbao and played his part in winning the penalty which reduced Atletico to ten men. A fiery and productive night for the forward.
Not the best of nights for the highly rated striker. He did win a penalty in the 39th minute but then missed the target with the kick. Should have scored in the 48th minute to finish the game off earlier.
Battled back to assist his side with the defensive duties need against a menacing attack force. Some nice trickery and good ball retention.
- 27 Joel Robles
- 3 Antonio López
Juanfran offered some pace and energy on the wing. The former Osasuna midfielder's shot, palmed up not out, fell to Reyes who should have done better, albeit from a tight angle on the rebound.
Formed part of a new look back three in the second-half. They were left vulnerable to the breaks of Athletic as the hosts needed to pull a goal back.
- 32 Koke
- 11 Fran Mérida
Replaced Forlan and offered very little in attack.
- 13 Raúl Fernández
- 20 Aitor Ocio
- 10 De Marcos
The youngster showed a good turn of speed and looked a threat. His pace fooled Ujfalusi into a getting himself a yellow card.
Came on to add defensive steel to the Basque midfield and did a fine job in helping his side see out the game.
- 11 Gabilondo
