Chivas tied it up late and escaped Santos with a draw.
By Andrea Martinez
Santos and Chivas split points at the Estadio Nuevo Corona on Saturday night during the 15th round of play.
Santos currently hold second place in group one and looks close to sealing their spot in the post season. Chivas have 18 points and mathematically still have an opportunity to qualify for the Liguilla.
First Half
Omar Arellano provided the first opportunity of the game for Chivas. He made his way down the field and tried to send the ball over Oswaldo Sanchez, but it flew over the crossbar.
Christian Benitez gave his first warning to Chivas in the 23rd minute. Santos received a free kick and Benitez stood in front of goal unguarded. He made contact with the ball, but his header went over the goal.
Xavi Baez had an opportunity at goal in the 33rd minute. He went into the box and took a shot, but Sanchez made the save in time to keep the score level.
Second Half
In the 70th minute Alberto ‘Venado’ Medina made his way down the right side of the box and looked to shoot at the goal through a tight angle, but the ball only hit the side netting.
Santos looked like they had taken the lead in the 85th minute. Benitez shook off Luis Michel and sent the ball to the back of the net, but he was deemed offside.
Less than a minute later, Benitez scored his 13th goal of the season. ‘Chato’ Rodriguez sent the ball from the left, and Oribe Peralta centered the ball for Benitez. The Ecuadorian then headed the ball into the back of the net to give Santos the lead.
Arellano equalized for Chivas in the 90th minute. Marco Fabian had made the play and taken the ball into the box, but he was knocked down and lost the ball. Arellano recuperated it in front of goal and had to just send it straight in for the equalizer.
