Thanks to Johannes Flum's winner, Freiburg edged Stuttgart in the southwestern derby.
In a lively first half, the visitors came out in fine form. Papiss Cisse had a shot saved in the opening seconds, and Freiburg created a few more chances before the 24th minute, when Flum finished an intricate passing sequence with a well-taken goal. The Breisgau Cedric Makiadi had a close-ranged shot
Stuttgart were vastly improved in the second half, at least from a defensive point of view. The Swabians rarely conceded possession and stifled their opponents in the attacking area. However, for all their dominance in the deeper two thirds of the pitch, VfB failed to create many opportunities in attack. Substitute Sven Schipplock nearly restored parity in the 75th minute, but wasted a good chance as he fired straight at goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.
The hosts' struggles took a turn towards comedy in the closing moments as substitute Martin Harnik struck the post with an open net awaiting his finish.
The result sees Stuttgart remain 17th in the Bundesliga, six points adrift of a position safe of relegation. Freiburg edge closer to Hannover, but remain sixth, a point behind the Saxons.
