Seattle Sounders FC 2-1 Chicago Fire: Fredy Montero Notches Winner In Extra Time
Seattle forward scores twice to give Seattle the winning margin over the Fire and former Sounder Freddie Ljungberg.
By John Zielonka
SEATTLE -- The match between the Seattle Sounders FC (9-8-5) and Chicago Fire (6-7-6) ended with forward Fredy Montero scoring once in each half. The game marked the return of former Sounder and Designated Player Freddie Ljungberg, with the hometown fans booing the Swede every time he touched the ball.
First Half
The homecoming for Freddie Ljungberg lasted until the first time he touched the ball, when his former supporters booed him.
The Sounders had the first opportunity in the second minute of play when Chicago defender Gonzalo Segares tripped Montero near the top of the penalty circle. The Colombian’s subsequent free kick passed to the right of the wall and required Fire ‘keeper Sean Johnson to deflect the ball onto the upright.
Chicago’s Patrick Nyarko lofted the ball into the air near inside the Seattle penalty box towards Steven Kinney four minutes later. Goalie Kasey Keller needed to leap high and fist the ball over the endline to stop the Chicago threat.
Referee Ramon Hernandez issued his first caution of the match to Chicago defender Steven Kinney. The second yellow of the night was issued to Fredy Montero in the 24th minute on a wrestling style take-down from behind on his old teammate Ljungberg. The Swede took the subsequent free kick and nearly caught the Sounders FC backline napping.
Referee Hernandez made the correct decision in awarding Chicago a penalty kick in the 28th minute. After a long ball from Baggio Husidic to Nyarko on the left side of the penalty box, the Chicago attacker sent a cross that hit Seattle defender Jeff Parke’s extended right arm. John Thorrington stepped up to the penalty spot and nailed his kick high into the net to give the visiting Fire a 1-0 lead.
Seattle tied the game eight minutes later on Fredy Montero’s ninth goal of the year. Defender Tyson Wahl, making the start in place of the suspended Leo Gonzalez at left back, crossed the ball from the left touchline. He found Montero in front of the net. The Colombian pulled the ball back and sent his shot past a sprawling Johnson to even the match. Wahl was credited with his first assist of the season.
Nkufo retaliated to an earlier challenge from C.J. Brown with a shove on the Chicago defender to drop him to the turf. Arbiter Hernandez gave the burly forward the third caution of the night three minute before the half was to end.
The physical play continued one minute into extra time. Sounders FC midfielder Sanna Nyassi tussled with Brown for control of the ball in the air. He raised his foot and caught the face of the Chicago defender, sending him down in a heap. Hernandez decided the foul wasn’t flagrant enough to warrant another card.

Second Half
Seattle threatened in the 52nd minute on a corner kick from Nathan Sturgis. His out-swinger fell to Jeff Parke but the defender sent his one-timer high over the net.
The home crowd howled for their own penalty a minute later. Montero lofted a soft pass towards midfielder Alvaro Fernandez inside the 18-yard box. The Uruguayan fought Brown and Segares for the ball and fell to the pitch. This time the official didn’t see a foul and play continued.
Steve Zakuani, who had recovered from a pelvic strain, entered the match in the 62nd minute for Nyassi.
Fire defender Segares knocked down Hernandez in the 75th minute, three yards outside the box to set up a Montero free kick. Instead of shooting, the Colombian passed the ball to his left to Sturgis. The strike rose high over the bar to the groans of the home supporters.
On a rare Chicago attack, Ljungberg received a caution for his collision and take-down of Parke. The ex-Arsenal player will miss his next match due to yellow card accumulations.
Montero scored the game winner in the 92nd minute, finally breaking through the tough Fire defense after Seattle continued to threaten. Sturgis’ cross from the right side found the waiting Colombian to the right of the Chicago goal. He headed the ball down past Johnson to give Seattle the winning tally.
Seattle plays Chivas USA at home on Wednesday in an U.S. Open Cup semifinal matchup. The Sounders’ next MLS game is next Saturday at New England, while Chicago hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy at Toyota Park.
