New England Revolution 1-2 Philadelphia Union: Philly Leaves It Late
New England’s woes continue as a late goal seals three points for the Union in Foxboro.
By Steve Stoehr
The Revolution could be forgiven for feeling robbed this evening. Despite playing more than fifty minutes down a man, they carried a 1-0 lead late into the second half before substitutes Jack McInerney and Justin Mapp broke Boston hearts with their late heroics.
Ilija Stolica muscled the home side into the lead in the first half with a predatory finish. A 41st minute red card to Cory Gibbs meant that it would always be difficult for the Revs to hold on for the result, and they were undone in the most gut-wrenching fashion with Union goals in the 82nd minute and the 2nd minute of stoppage time.
First Half
The first half at Gillette Stadium began very slowly, with few chances on either side. Both teams had decent build-up play but failed to find the final ball, with the Revolution looking a little sharper in the first twenty minutes.
They would have the first really good chance of the match when a quick counterattack saw Marko Perovic and Stolica streaking down the field in a 2-on-1. Perovic’s cross to Stolica was heavy, though, and the Serbian striker’s off-balance header looped well wide of goal.
Philadelphia created a clear chance through Kyle Nakazawa, but his half-volley from a good position was skied badly. A minute later midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Sainey Nyassi.
New England made the breakthrough in the 31st minute off a well-taken Perovic corner kick. The Serbian’s delivery bounced to Shalrie Joseph, who worked frantically to keep it alive. He managed to push it to Ilija Stolica, whose finish from about 5 yards wasn’t pretty but put the ball in the back of the net.
Just five minutes later Sainey Nyassi tried to double the Revs’ advantage all by himself. A deflection back to him roughly 25 yards out teed up nicely for him, and he drilled a left-footed volley that smacked off the left post. Just a moment later in the same sequence he was on the end of a Chris Tierney cross, but pushed his wide-open header just over the bar.
Philadelphia had contributed little to the match in the opening forty or so minutes, but they caught a massive break before the interval. Cory Gibbs had a leg raised a little too high when he went in late on Eduardo Coudet and the official didn’t hesitate before flashing a straight red card to the veteran defender. The Revs managed to maintain the lead going into halftime.

Second Half
Piotr Nowak began the second half by bringing on Roger Torres for Coudet, a move signaling clear attacking intent. New England had the first opportunity of the half, however, when Shalrie Joseph smashed one over from distance in the 49th minute.
The Union mounted a serious challenge in the 51st minute when Jordan Harvey played a good ball into the box for Sebastien Le Toux. The Frenchman did well to hold the ball rather than taking a low-percentage shot, and he laid it off but the ensuing effort was blocked.
Up until about the 75th minute the Revolution continued to give as good as they got despite their numbers disadvantage. The Union had the better of the possession but the Revs were still generating chances and looking dangerous in attack.
That changed when Justin Mapp and youngster Jack McInerney entered the fray in the 65th and 77th minutes, respectively. The two provided a spark and inventiveness that had been lacking from the Union’s attack all game.
Indeed, it was they who would combine to create the equalizer in the 82nd minute. Justin Mapp had possession on the right and cut inside before playing a delicate chip into the box. It found the feet of a rushing McInerney just a yard or so off the goal line, and it was a tricky finish but in the end easy work for the USA youth international, who was booked for removing his shirt in celebration.
The Revolution had one last clear chance to take back the lead when a Marko Perovic corner found the head of an unmarked Shalrie Joseph. The Grenadian international and MLS legend hasn’t scored a goal yet this season and despite having space and the goal at his mercy, Joseph flicked the header wide.
Both teams were scrapping for the win in the dying moments but it would be the Philadelphia faithful who would go home happy. After a close call in their own end as Khano Smith nearly put the Revolution ahead, the Union’s Chris Seitz booted a long drop kick to Danny Mwanga, who had Le Toux in support. The Frenchman received the ball and despite being stripped by Chris Tierney, recovered and laid it off to Mapp, making a late run. His shot from the top of the box was instant and precise, giving the Union the lead and the win in the second minute of stoppage time.
