New York Red Bulls 2-0 San Jose Earthquakes: Thierry Henry Opens MLS Account
Dane Richards burned two players and the goalkeeper late in first half stoppage time to open the scoring before turning provider and setting up Thierry Henry's first MLS goal.
By Nick Rosano
HARRISON, N.J. -- A crowd of 21,859 at Red Bull Arena provided the atmosphere as the home side defeated the San Jose Earthquakes through an impressive evening from Dane Richards, who provided a goal and an assist.
San Jose and New York started with the same teams they used in big victories last week over the Los Angeles Galaxy and Toronto FC, respectively. New York selected their team without any restrictions, while San Jose continues to struggle with a host of injured players.
First Half
The Red Bulls looked lively early with Joel Lindpere getting the better of Tim Ward early and delivering a cross to the far post, where Dane Richards beat Bobby Convey but couldn't put his shot on goal.
The Earthquakes responded only two minutes later when Arturo Alvarez beat both Roy Miller and Lindpere. The El Salvadorian winger cut back from the wing across the top of the box and ripped a shot straight at Bouna Coundoul. Coundoul punched the ball directly to Chris Wondolowski, but the forward was offside.
Thierry Henry nearly opened his account in the 12th minute after some inspired set-up play from Rafa Marquez. After a cleared corner, Joel Lindpere played the ball back into the corner to Marquez, who feigned a cross before cutting by Cornell Glen. The Mexican repeated the move, this time past Bobby Convey, before lofting the ball to the back post where Brian McDonald headed straight back out to Henry, but the Frenchman's shot was cleared off the line by Tim Ward.
It was Thierry Henry again who nearly blew the game open in the 20th minute. Angel found space on the left side of the box and held the ball up before finding his strike partner at the top of the box. Henry took a touch and curled the ball into the lower right corner, beating Jon Busch, only to strike the post.
Despite a strong opening from the Red Bulls, the Earthquakes weathered the storm and began to create good opportunities themselves. First, Sam Cronin opened up the Red Bulls lines by squeaking a pass through the midfielders to Wondolowski, who turned with the ball and immediately played Cornell Glen into the box. Glen strode into the open space, but his shot for the far post sailed wide.
Next, Alvarez received the ball on the right wing and turned on the speed, taking Roy Miller to the end line where he pulled back, sending Miller sliding past him. Alvarez looked up and fired a low cross to a streaking Glen, but Glen couldn’t keep his one-time deflection on frame.
In first half stoppage time Dane Richards opened the scoring after he collected a bouncing ball 10 yards above the top of the box at full speed. He pushed past Brandon McDonald before touching the ball between Bobby Burling’s legs. Richards feigned a right-footed shot, sending Busch sliding the wrong way, before driving past the stranded ‘keeper and passing the ball into the back of the net.

Second Half
The second half opened with an incredibe series of events as the Red Bulls pushed to add a second. Roy Miller sent in a near-post cross to Thierry Henry, who flicked the ball with his back heel towards the far post, but Jon Busch dived down to his right to deny Henry. The save dropped right in front of Juan Pablo Angel who pounced, but what should have been an easy goal for the veteran forward was wasted when his shot hit the post and rolled behind Busch.
Henry continued to press for his first goal as he took a pass from Angel, chipped it up and attempted to lob it over Busch, but the Earthquakes goalkeeper got up and tipped it over the bar.
Arturo Alvarez continued to cause trouble as he picked up the ball in the 60th minute near midfield and drove into the open space in the center of the pitch. He dropped the ball to Cornell Glen, who played it back to him at the top of the box, where Alvarez cut back to his left and fired a shot just over the top left corner of the goal.
Dane Richards continued his impressive night in the 63rd minute with an assist to Thierry Henry. The play started on the right wing with Chris Albright bringing the ball forward before sending Richards past Convey. The diminutive winger crossed to the back post for Henry, whose first touch sent the ball spinning up in the air, but the Frenchman waited for it to fall and fired it past Jon Busch.
The Earthquakes nearly clawed one back in the 78th minute when Bobby Convey collected the ball on the left wing and put in a dangerous cross that would have resulted in a tap-in for Cornell Glen if not for the slightest interception by Tim Ream to put the ball out for a corner.
The last 10 minutes turned into a passing clinic for the Red Bulls as they killed off the game.
