Sevilla 1-0 Osasuna: Los Nervionenses End Horrible Losing Streak

A goal from Frederic Kanoute was enough to see the hosts bag the three points ...

Sevilla made a great start to 2011 as they disposed of Osasuna in a tightly-contested affair at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Frederic Kanoute scored the sole goal of the game in first half to help his team halt a horrible five-game losing streak and ease the pressure on Gregorio Manzano.

Los Nervionenses made their intentions known right from the start as they had three chances to break the deadlock in the opening two minutes of the game. Alvaro Negredo was the main culprit as he saw two finishes from inside the box saved and a header fly wide of the left post.

Sevilla continued to dominate the game and it seemed like it was a matter of time before they open the scoring. Diego Capel was granted with a glorious opportunity in the tenth minute when he picked out a horrible backpass from Juanfran on the left wing, but blasted his finish into the side after advancing into the box.

Osasuna tried to fight back and created their first chance in the in the 18th minute when Juanfran was released on the right side of the box, following a bad mistake by Sevilla's defence, but saw his shot saved by Andres Palop.

This proved to be the one and only good chance for the visitors in the first half as Los Nervionenses were stepping up a gear and were looking more dangerous with a every second. Romaric had a shot from distance saved by Ricardo in the 24th minute and near the half-hour mark Kanoute went close with a deft finish after a cross in the box by Jesus Navas.

The Mali international did not wait long for his first strike of the night, though. In the 35th minute Kanoute headed in an inch-perfect cross by Navas from the left wing to give Sevilla the lead. The goal saw the hosts completely change their gameplan as they began defending deep in their own half in an effort to preserve their lead.

The second period saw Osasuna improve greatly as they were attacking down the right, left and through the centre in search of an equaliser. Sevilla, for their part, were doing their best to frustrate their opponents.

Kanoute had a chance to put the game out of Osasuna's reach in the 61st minute when he blasted a shot from inside the box left of Ricardo's goal. Just before the seventy-minute mark Sergio Fernandez saw a header from the centre of the box saved after a cross by Francisco Punal.

Kike Sola saw a good shot from inside the box saved in the 77th minute and moments later Fernando Navarro had to put his body on the line for his team in order to prevent Damia from levelling the score from near the penalty spot.

Despite Osasuna's pressure, Gregorio Manzano's men managed to hold onto their lead and picked up the three points in the end.

The win sees Sevilla climb to fifth in the standing, while Jose Antonio Camacho's men are fifteenth. Los Nervionenses next league game is a visit to Real Sociedad on the 8th January, while Osasuna host Getafe a day later.
