Atletico Madrid 2-0 Deportivo La Coruna: Brilliant Sergio Aguero Dismantles Sorry Visitors

It was all too easy for Los Colchoneros tonight.

Atletico Madrid put an end to their three-game losing streak with a comprehensive victory over a surprisingly poor Deportivo outfit at the Vicente Calderon. Sergio Aguero proved decisive tonight as the Argentinian recorded a brace in the first half which was enough to earn the three points for Los Colchoneros, despite Diego Forlan missing a penalty early in the game.

Quique Sanchez Flores' men started the game with attacking intent and had a chance to open the scoring as early as the fourth minute when Aguero was brought down in the penalty area by Daniel Aranzubia and the referee pointed to the spot. Forlan, however, was denied by the goalkeeper and the chance went begging.

Four minutes later Aguero took matters into his own hands and put Atletico Madrid in the driving seat with a sublime solo effort. The Argentinian was a good three yards offside, but despite Deportivo's players' protests, the goal was allowed to stand.

Atletico Madrid continued to press forward and create chances. Forlan saw a free-kick deflected by Aranzubia onto the left post in the 26th minute and moments later the Uruguayan was twice denied by blocks in the penalty box.

Los Colchoneros finally got the second goal they deserved in the 35th minute when Aguero completed his brace after some wonderful interplay between him and Raul Garcia. The Galicians tried to fight back before the break, but were ultimately unable to and Atletico Madrid entered half-time with a solid lead.

The hosts, clearly content with the result so far, allowed their level of performance to drop and surrender the initiative to the visitors in the second half. While Deportivo were dominating in territorial sense, they were struggling to create clear-cut chances.

Midway through the second period both teams seemed to have completely lost motivation and it looked like the game was being played out. Misplaced passes were the order of the day as neither team managed to create a real opportunity until the very last minutes of the game.

Aguero had a chance to complete his hat-trick in the waning minutes of the game, but failed to find the target from a difficult angle after rounding Aranzubia.

Following tonight's result Atletico Madrid move up to sixth in the standings, while Deportivo are 12th. Los Colchoneros' next league game is a visit to Malaga in eight days, while the Galicians host Sporting Gijon a day earlier.
