Chivas USA 0-0 Seattle Sounders FC: Scoreless Draw In Los Angeles

Chivas USA and Seattle Seattle Sounders settled for a scoreless draw in a late game Saturday night. The physical match saw few opportunites for both squads as they look to get out of the Western Conference cellar. Physical play throughout the match prevented either team from dominating play, as goalkeeper collisions and rough tackling were more prevalent than shots on goal.

First Half

Kickoff signaled the starting debuts for two players, as Alan Gordon took the pitch as the newest member of Chivas USA and new designated player Alvaro Fernandez got his first start with Seattle.

The match began with both teams eager to establish their offensive presence. The Goats struggled to find their debutante, Alan Gordon, through the first 20 minutes. Chivas USA failed to connect on intermediate passes in the midfield as Seattle pressed a peculiar Chivas USA midfield. Martin Vasquez opted to move Michael Lahoud to central midfield and complimented him with Osael Romero, the once highly touted El Salvador international who has struggled to even get on the bench.

Seattle meanwhile had more clarity in their attack, opting for a vertical scheme to take advantage of counterattacking opportunities, but too often found themselves struggling to find Blaise Nkufo up front. Nkufo consistently was forced to retreat to the midfield area in search of touches as the half progressed and was unable to muster a threat alongside Freddy Montero.

In the 30th minute, Ante Jazic surprisingly made an exit as he suffered from flu-like symptoms and made way for Jonathan Bornstein, coming off a 90 minute performance against Brazil on Tuesday.

Just eight minutes later, Freddy Montero and Zach Thornton were involved in a collision that saw the match stopped as both players lay in the penalty area. Replays show that Montero got the worst of the impact, but he was helped up after a few minutes and indicated that he would be able to continue. Thornton, though, struggled to locate his contact lenses, and when the Goats training squad opened a new pack for him, he dropped it, causing further delay in the match.

Play finally resumed in the 43rd minute, ending a physical, yet ineffective half for both squads.

Second Half

The second half began with a substitution for Chivas USA as Osael Romero was pulled following a quiet first half in favor of Giancarlo Maldonado, who began the match on the bench following a national team call-up this week for Venezuela.

The move paid off immediately as the Goats were able to push Seattle's lines back and increase possession on Seattle's side of the pitch. The Goats generated attacking situations, but they received three offside calls in the first 10 minutes of the second half for their efforts.

In the 58th minute, Chivas USA's insistence appeared to pay off as Paulo Nagamura cleverly slid a cross past the mouth of Casey Keller's goal but Gordon was not able to finish the opportunity. Maldonado smashed the follow-up right into Keller, ending the best threat of the match for either side.

In the 59th minute, Nkufo created a dangerous opportunity for Seattle, luring Thornton to the left side of the pitch and floating a cross to a wide open Sanna Nyassi, but Nyassi hit the post and bailed out Thornton.

Seattle inserted Miguel Montano for Alvaro Fernandez in the 67th as both squads looked to create more dangerous opportunities as they continued to insert offensive-minded players into the match, with little result.

In the 75th minute, another dangerous collision -- this time involving Keller and Gordon -- stopped the match.

In the 88th minute, Ovaldo Alonso looked to steal all three points for Seattle as he smashed a shot from 25 yards out that looked like an impossible stop for Thornton, but the reigning Goalkeeper of the Year fully extended to keep the ball out.

In the 90th, the physical match escalated as rough play from Mariano Trujillo and Leo Gonzalez resulted in straight red cards for both, ending the match shortly thereafter in a draw.
