San Jose Earthquakes Vs Seattle Sounders FC: Head To Head Preview
By Giovanni Albanese Jr. and John Zielonka
On Form
San Jose Earthquakes: If there's anything to take away from the game in Los Angeles where the Quakes blew two one-goal leads to tie the Galaxy 2-2 last week, it's that this club has the approach to win games away from home against quality teams. They may not be the most talented team in MLS, but with a little confidence, on top of that aforementioned approach, San Jose could surprise some teams.
Seattle Sounders FC: Winger Steve Zakuani's brace against the Colorado Rapids provided the winning margin in the 2-1 victory at Qwest Field, their first win against a Western Conference foe this year. Last year's top draft pick scored his sixth and seventh goals of the year. Kasey Keller made several outstanding saves that helped the Sounders earn three critical points. Forward Fredy Montero continued to be Seattle's best playmaker and notched his eighth assist of the year on Zakuani's second goal.
Off Target
San Jose: Major League Soccer was smart to name Bobby Convey as the replacement to Chivas USA's Jonathan Bornstein in this year's MLS All-Star Game. Convey is one of the leaders of a Quakes team that is pushing to make it into the playoffs for the first time since returning to MLS in 2008.
Seattle: The speed of Colorado's Omar Cummings proved to be a handful for substitute Zach Scott. He was inserted into the starting lineup after Tyrone Marshall's quad strain continued to act up. Cummings ran circles around the Seattle defender and should have scored a second goal if not for a fingertip save by Keller. This may be a non-issue with the return of Leo Gonzalez, who sat out because of five yellow card accumulations, and Marshall into the starting XI.
Tactics
San Jose: Cornell Glen is questionable for this week's game against Seattle, but if he's available to play on game day, Frank Yallop should stick to his 4-4-2 that leaves last year's surprise player Ryan Johnson on the bench. With Sam Cronin coming around since being acquired earlier this month, the Quakes are in line to be one of the scarier teams in the second half of the season -- health permitting.
Seattle: Montero played more of an offensive midfielder role and his eight assists thus far showcase his ability to distribute the ball. Blaise Nkufo, with his physical size and presence, could be the perfect complement to Zakuani and Montero on the offensive front. Sigi Schmid should consider having this trio stay intact to generate more scoring chances with a 4-3-3 formation.

Intangibles
San Jose: Coming out of the World Cup break, Yallop decided to stick Jon Busch in the net over Earthquakes long-time net minder Joe Cannon. It may be an unpopular choice, but Busch brings better communication for his back line, and he's younger and more athletic too -- even with his small frame. That could play a major factor when the club is vying for a spot in the playoffs and beyond.
Seattle: Nkufo didn't appear to be match fit in his initial MLS game. After a long season in the Netherlands and his World Cup duties with Switzerland, he was a step behind his teammates as plays developed. Give him several more games to improve his stamina, and he could be the difference in the Sounders' playoff drive.
Outcome
San Jose: Seattle hasn't been the best of club's this season. They are never as good on the road as they are at Qwest Field. Last year, the Earthquakes handed them one of their worst defeats -- 4-0 -- at Buck Shaw Stadium. It won't be as bad, but it should be another San Jose win. 2-0 final for the home team.
Seattle: The 'Quakes give the Sounders a test, but the visitors walk away with one important point on the road. Seattle Sounders FC 2 (Montero, Nkufo) - 2 San Jose (Wondolowski, Convey).
