Philadelphia Union 1-1 New England Revolution: Le Toux Nets His 8th Goal, But The Union Must Settle For Draw
Both sides take a point from first-ever meeting.
By Ramin Majd
CHESTER, Pa. – There were no late-game heroics today for the Philadelphia Union and the 18,137 fans at PPL Park.
Sebastien Le Toux’s highlight-reel score in the 25th minute put the home side ahead, but Marko Perovic’s long-range, bouncing stunner in the 70th earned the visitors a 1-1 draw.
First Half
The game’s first serious chance came in the 8th minute. New England’s Sainey Nyassi had a clear run down the right side of the pitch, with only defender Jordan Harvey to beat. But Harvey did not panic, and calmly disarmed the Gambian with a clinical tackle.
The Revs’ standout made another dangerous run down the right wing in the 12th. The Union showed their respect for the midfielder by sending both Stefani Miglioranzi and Cristian Arrieta to close Nyassi down—and after a struggle, they did.
Nyassi finally got a shot off in the 14th, from the right side of the area. But his blast went just wide of the left post.
In the 22nd minute, Alejandro Moreno was on the receiving end of a leg to the upper body from Revs midfielder Pat Phelan. Referee Jasen Anno called the foul on Moreno, putting the Venezuelan and the home crowd into a state of loud disbelief.
The Union opened the scoring in the 25th. Sebastien Le Toux passed from the left of the top of the box to Danny Mwanga in the center. The ball found its way back to Le Toux, who fired a curving rocket to the top right corner of the net.
Mwanga looked to send the Union up 2-0 in the 30th minute, getting free on the left side. But Nyassi—who was all over the field in this game—took the ball off the Philly rookie.
Le Toux nearly had his 9th goal of the season in the 36th minute, as Union midfielder Fred connected with the Frenchman heading into the center of New England’s 18. This time however, New England’s defense got back in time to interfere with his shot.
The Revs had a chance to equalize in the 41st, when Marko Perovic was given a free kick from just outside the right end of the area. The Serbian international sent a clear shot on goal, but just over Philly keeper Chris Seitz’s crossbar.
New England’s Shalrie Joseph drew a yellow for a collision with Miglioranzi near the end of the first half. Le Toux sent the ensuing free kick just a few feet over the New England frame.

Second Half
The Revs had two quick scoring opportunities to open the second half.
In the 47th, Nyassi sent a cross in to Joseph. The Grenada native’s header was weak, and easily handled by Seitz. In the 51st, New England defender Kevin Alson ripped a shot unmarked from 25 yards out, but just over the crossbar.
A minute later, Philly defender Michael Orozco Fiscal took a pass from Fred into right side of New England’s area. Orozco Fiscal sent a slow, picture-perfect pass just feet in front of Revs keeper Matt Reis, but no one from Philadelphia was there.
The Revs equalized in the 71st minute off a free kick from Perovic. The Serb’s skipping shot confused everyone, including Seitz—who could not follow the strike’s last, high bounce.
The Union had an opportunity to retake the lead in the 77th, as new acquisition Justin Mapp received the ball at the top of the 18. However, the former Chicago Fire player took too long to make a decision and lost the ball to the Revs defense.
Despite a flurry of chances near and during stoppage time, Philadelphia could not regain the lead, and the match ended 1-1. The home crowd booed vociferously, feeling that a series of non-calls prevented their side from winning.
