SANDY, Utah -- It wasn’t always pretty, but it was exciting, and in the end Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA shared the points in a 1-1 draw in front of a sellout crowd of 19,469 on a balmy night at Rio Tinto Stadium. Ned Grabavoy scored a wonder goal to put RSL up, but Jesus Padilla equalized just three minutes later to earn Chivas a deserved share of the points.
First Half
The first quarter of an hour was a disjointed affair, as the Goats had difficulty getting much going in the way of possession. For their part, Salt Lake did a decent enough job in the midfield, but they were impatient and tried to play too directly. As a result, neither team managed a meaningful shot until the 27th minute.
The first shot was recorded by Kyle Beckerman, making his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury against this same Chivas team on May 22. Beckerman took a square ball outside the top of the penalty area and unleashed a low drive that missed the right post by inches.
In the 33rd minute, Chivas saw a golden opportunity go wanting. A difficult high ball resulted in Justin Braun getting the ball untangled from Nat Borchers. Braun hit a deflection off Borchers that fell right to the streaking Giancarlo Maldonado, who went into the box with only Nick Rimando to beat. But just as Maldonado let his shot fly, All-Star center back Jamison Olave slid in and deflected it out for a corner.
In the 37th minute, RSL had their best chance of the night up to that point. They were finally able to work some possession deep in the Chivas end, which resulted in Beckerman sticking a pass into Alvaro Saborio 16 yards from goal. Saborio turned and hit a good shot, but it deflected off a defender’s boot and took to the air, flying just over the crossbar and landing on top of the goal.
Real again nearly opened their account off a low shot by Saborio, this time in the 44th minute. The Costa Rican international received a lovely ball from Fabian Espindola, undressed one defender, and shot. But once again, his shot was inches wide.

Second Half
Andy Williams starting things off on a positive note for Real Salt Lake in the second half, firing a hard shot on goal in the 47th minute. But he was too far out to really test Dan Kennedy, who made the easy save.
Just two minutes later, it was Will Johnson who nearly opened the scoring for RSL. Johnson made a hard run through the Goats’ defense just as Beckerman put a nifty chip over the top, catching Johnson in stride. He tried to put a just a slight touch on the ball, but his touch was too heavy and he poked the ball just over the crossbar.
Saborio continued to be Salt Lake’s most dangerous attacker, and he nearly got his team on the board again in the 62nd minute. This time Javier Morales did the heavy lifting, working up field before finding Saborio on the right side. Saborio got a hold of a wicked shot from 18 yards that just missed the upper right corner.
Saborio again nearly hit pay dirt in the 66th minute after an Andy Williams cross was poorly cleared and fell right to Saborio. He got it on frame this time, but Kennedy was there to make the save.
But on the ensuing corner kick, Real finally managed to break the ice. Morales’ corner was cleared to the top of the box, but Grabavoy was right there waiting. Grabavoy, who had just entered the game for Beckerman, hit it on the volley first time and stuck it right inside the left upper V.
Down but not out, Chivas wasted no time leveling the match. In the 70th minute, Padilla took a pass from Chivas newbie Maldonado and ripped a hard shot right at Rimando. But Rimando ended up knocking the ball down and between his legs, and it bounced into the goal to level the match 1-1.
The frenetic pace of the game slowed down a bit after the two teams traded scores, and neither team was able to threaten the other from then on out. Jamison Olave had a half chance very close to goal in the 72nd minute, but Kennedy made a good reaction save to preserve the draw. Neither team came any closer to stealing the full three points.
Both teams will be at home next week following the MLS All-Star Game. Real Salt Lake host D.C. United while Chivas USA entertain the Columbus Crew at the Home Depot Center.
