Los Angeles Galaxy 2-2 San Jose Earthquakes: Galaxy Rally Back In California Clasico
Rivalry match was fiercely contested.
By Jonathan Vera
CARSON, Calif. -- The Earthquakes fired in a goal for an early start, but Edson Buddle knocked in one for a full dozen on the season and Landon Donovan stole the show with late heroics.
It was a cool night in Southern California where the masses gathered, 17,712 in total, to witness a spectacle of a match. This was the first meeting of the California Clasico and San Jose were a formidable opponent. The Quakes had a quick edge on L.A., but thanks to captain Landon Donovan, the Galaxy walked out with one point.
San Jose's Bobby Convey scored early for his side, but then after, LA pressed on and knocked one in thanks to Edson Buddle. In the second half, SJ answered back with a corner kick goal from Brandon McDonald but just when it seemed all was lost of the LA side, the face of American Soccer, Donovan scored to end the game in a two all draw.
First Half
San Jose did not come to LA to merely play, but rather, to dominate. From the opening whistle, the Quakes pressed on the Galaxy midfield and back-line. It was minute one and change when San Jose launched an attack. Forward Cornell Glen took a shot near the 18, but it was parried away by LA net-minder Donovan Rickets to defender Leonardo who fanned the clearing attempt. The ball took a fortuitous bounce to Bobby Convey, who sent the ball past Ricketts and into the net.
Convey's goal at 1:40 was the fastest goal anyone had scored against the Galaxy all season.
The early goal by San Jose seemed wake up and light a fire underneath the Galaxy. After the fifth minute, LA turned up the heat and applied pressure on the Quakes by creating opportunities, forcing SJ mistakes and firing shots at the net.
There was a scary moment on the pitch in the 33rd minute when forward Alan Gordon was trying to receive a lob from downtown. Gordon went for the header, but instead found the hip and knee of SJ goalie Jon Busch while intercepting. The hip check sent Gordon down for an eight count; he was a little rattled but okay to continue.
Shortly after, SJ's Glen mysteriously hit the dirt while defender Omar Gonzalez was guarding him. Referee in charge Jair Marrufo did not buy that he was badly injured and allowed play to go on. Glen was down for a while.
LA kicked it up a notch after the early goal tallying seven shots, but the pressure only awoke a vamped San Jose side. LA had more notable opportunities, but nothing on the board after one.

Second Half
In the 47th minute LA sent one past the goal line, but was not awarded the goal. San Jose gave up corner kick to LA. Captain Landon Donovan took the corner and sent it into the six yard box, where a shot by Edson Buddle pinballed up and hit the cross bar. The deflection redirected into the net. Convey was standing guard about a foot deep in the net and knocked it out. The ball clearly went past the line, and also in the chaos, hit Convey in the hand.
The officials both missed the Galaxy goal and the handball by Convey, which may spread the goal-line technology argument to MLS.
However, it was all smiles in the 59th minute when the Galaxy finally sent one past the net. Donovan initiated the play and sent a through pass to defender Todd Dunivant who delivered the cross to the six. Forward Alan Gordon was there to receive it, but right when everyone thought he was going to take it, he instead dummied it to Edson Buddle, who blasted the ball into the net.
Buddle has now tallied an entire dozen in goals.
Los Angeles was starting to get a edge, but San Jose answered back. It was the 71st minute and the Quakes had a corner. The delivery was sent in and defender Ike Opara blasted it. Ricketts was able to get a foot on it, but was not enough, as the ball trickled right in front of Brandon McDonald who shot it in for the goal. SJ take a 2-1 lead.
It almost seemed lost for LA. They resorted to desperate measures by putting three in the back line, a tactic that ended up working out for coach Bruce Arena.
The game was almost over, but 90th heroics by Donovan clinched the draw. LA was on the attack, the cross was sent by Tristan Bowen, and Edson Buddle got a foot on it but was stopped by Busch. Donovan, in the right place at the right time, tapped it in for the goal.
It was a blockbuster finish for LA. An exciting draw for the fans, as everybody walked out with smiles.
