Bayern Munich 0-0 Koeln: Bavarians Win On Penalties
After a scoreless hour of play, Bayern beat Koeln on penalties.

Bayern Munich edged Koeln in penalty shoot-out in this evening's LIGA total! Cup semi-final in Gelsenkirchen. Milivoje Novakovic missed a pair of gilt-edged chances for the Westphalians, who bowed out of the competition after Rouven Sattelmaier saved Martin Lanig's penalty kick.
In the match, which featured two 30-minute halves, Koeln's first team faced off against a Bayern side that featured several reserves, and only Ivica Olic and Diego Contento from its best starting XI.
While Bayern controlled the majority of possession, Koeln used their time on the ball to greater effect, and were far more successful in creating scoring opportunities. Midway through the first half. Novakovic sprung the offside trap and should have scored, but his finish hit the side netting. Later, the Slovenian had an even better opportunity, but his chipped shot again drifted wide of the left post.
After the half-time break, there was very little rhythm to the game. Neither side could maintain possession and string together enough passes to set up a clear chance on goal, and there was a veritable dearth of scoring opportunities. Six minutes from full time, Koeln's Taner Yalcin drove a long shot wide of the left post, but that was the only real exciting moment of the half, and the match went to penalties.
In a three-man spot kick shoot-out, Bayern trio Andreas Ottl, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and Ivica Olic scored, but only Yalcin could convert for Koeln. Lanig had had his shot saved by Sattelmaier, and that decided the outcome.
Bayern may have advanced to the final, but they will have to improve significantly if they are to defeat red-hot Schalke.
