Schalke 2-1 Hamburg: Raul Makes Debuts In Slim Win
The Gelsenkirchen side have advanced to the LIGA total! final.
By Clark Whitney
Schalke earned a 2-1 victory over Hamburg in this afternoon's LIGA total! Cup semi-final in Gelsenkirchen. Second half goals from Edu and Jermaine Jones canceled Ruud van Nistelrooy's opener as Schalke took the spoils.
The match, which consisted of two 30-minute halves, marked Raul's debut for Schalke, and the former Real Madrid striker was nearly gifted a goal in the early going. The veteran had a free kick parried off his chest, and the ball just went wide of the mark.
Instead, it was Raul's old team-mate, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who netted the opener. After Christoph Metzelder played a blind back-pass, the Hamburg striker pounced, rounded goalkeeper Mathias Schober, and scored comfortably.
After the half-time break, Schalke mounted a typical, impressive comeback. Raul missed a one-on-one chance with goalkeeper Frank Rost, and Jefferson Farfan's header hit the post before Edu slotted in the equalizer.
Hamburg were not without chances of their own. David Jarolim sprung the offside trap only to be denied by Schober's decisive intervention, and Van Nistelrooy's close range effort was blocked by Metzelder.
Nonetheless, Schalke looked the better side, with Farfan repeatedly finding space on the right flank. The Peruvian almost scored a goal of his own before setting up team-mate Alexander Baumjohann for what should have been a comfortable finish.
Schalke's winner, much like Hamburg's opener, turned out to be the result of a defensive lapse in concentration. Colin Benjamin cheaply conceded possession to Ivan Rakitic before Jermaine Jones fired home a daisy-cutter that Rost should have saved.
Over the closing minutes, both sides had chances, but neither looked entirely up to speed. Schalke nonetheless continued their impressive pre-season with today's victory, and will now go on to face the winner of the Bayern Munich versus Koeln encounter, which will be played later today.
