Tottenham 2-1 Red Bulls: Thierry Henry Scores, But Tottenham Storm Back
New player opens his account in friendly.
By Terence Steed
HARRISON, N.J. - -Thierry Henry scored his first goal in a New York Red Bulls jersey against his old rivals Tottenham Hotspur, but the North London club capitalized on some poor defending in the second half through The rest of the game played like an exhibition and the Red Bulls reserves struggled in attack and Tottenham was content to play defense.
In the age of Red Bull the 20,312 crowd was disappointing for Thierry Henry’s debut, but those who did show up got what they came for as Henry scored the game winner against his old rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Red Bulls were without Juan Pablo Angel as he was still recovering from a sprained ankle. Mac Kandji replaced him, partnering the man of the night, Thierry Henry. Carl Robinson got a start in center midfield pushing Seth Stammler to the left wing.
Tottenham moved Gareth Bale into midfield as part of a 4-5-1 with Robbie Keane as the lone forward. Reserves Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton got a start in defense.
First Half
Within the first minute Tottenham had a shot on goal through Tom Huddlestone, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Despite Tottenham’s early possession, it was Henry with the first real chance of the game.
After some nice build up play down the left, Roy Miller played the ball to Henry checking back. Henry let it through to Mac Kandji who played it back to Henry. The Frenchman sent a cross field pass to Dane Richards on the right wing. Richards cut back inside and centered to Kandji at the top of the box. The ball ricocheted into Henry’s path as he broke in alone on Cudicin, but the Italian guessed correctly and smothered his first attempt on goal as a Red Bull.
Henry turned provider only three minutes later as he flicked a ball over his head into the path of Dane Richards down the right wing. The diminutive Jamaican played a perfect pass across the six to a wide open Seth Stammler, but he failed to connect with his left foot leaving the ball bouncing inside the six. Kandji closed quickly but he could only fire it directly into Cudicini’s chest.
In the 16th minute Jermaine Jenas showed some skill as he juggled the ball up and over the Red Bulls center backs forcing Tim Ream to bring him down just outside the box. Tom Huddlestone stepped up, but his shot deflected up and over for a corner.
Henry opened his account in the 25th minute after some hard work from Joel Lindpere, who found some time alone with Alan Hutton on the right wing. Lindpere feinted a move, then burst past the Scottish fullback and played a perfect pass to Henry who broke past Kyle Walker to the near post and glanced the ball into the far corner of the net.
Tottenham were not prepared to watch the Henry show as they regained control of the game and pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but their preseason rustiness showed as they could not connect on the final pass. First Jermaine Jenas missed wide, then Robbie Keane had his point blank header saved off the line by Bouna Coundoul.
The half ended with Robbie Keane breaking in on goal with only Tim Ream in front of him. He turned the rookie center back several times, but Ream stuck a leg out and took the ball off him just before he could take a shot.

Second Half
Harry Redknapp kept his team mostly intact to open the second half with only Andros Townsend and Adel Taarabt coming in for Vedran Corluka and Kyle Naughton. Hans Backe gave Greg Sutton a run at goal, while Mike Petke and Tony Tchani replaced Carlos Mendes and Thierry Henry.
The second half opened with a noticeable drop in intensity. Seth Stammler nearly made up for his earlier miss with two near misses. First, he put his left-footed shot wide and only moments later his back heel flick missed wide as well.
Robbie Keane continued to torment the Red Bulls defenders with his sneaky runs and nearly equalized in the 60th minute after Adel Taarabt played him in with a nice lead pass, but Greg Sutton got a foot to it.
Only two minutes later and Keane found the equalizer after Tony Tchani headed the ball out of Sutton’s hands at the near post on a corner. The ball skipped to the back post where Keane had an easy volley.
Jeremy Hall entered the match for Chris Albright and gifted Tottenham a goal within five minutes. After Gareth Bale put him under pressure, Hall tried an ill-advised back header but couldn’t get enough force behind it to reach Sutton. Bale pounced on the opportunity and poked it into the back of the net to take the lead.
With the intensity fully restored to the game, the Red Bulls began throwing players forward in the hopes of finding an equalizer of their own. Tottenham was happy to give them possession, but despite a series of half-chances and corners, including one Mike Petke header off the cross bar, the Red Bulls failed to break the Tottenham defense.
