D.C United 0-1 Seattle Sounders: Seattle Scores Late
Series tied at one each between the clubs.
By Max Zeger
In front of 13,716 fans, D.C United lost for their tenth time of the season, while Seattle gained a much needed victory on the road. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the decisive goal not coming until the 89th minute, a Roger Levesque header after a bad give away from Jordan Graye.
First Half
After a scoreless draw at Red Bull Arena last weekend, D.C United made one change, the impressive Jaime Moreno, who hadn’t started since May, replacing Australian forward, Danny Allsopp. The visitors made two changes, Pat Noonan replacing the suspended Miguel Montano, and Roger Levesque in for Nate Jaqua who suffered a groin strain befor the game. New Designated Players, Branko Boskovic and Blaise N’kufo both started on the bench.
The first action of the game came from Fredy Montero, who’s blistering 30 yard shot sprayed just wide of Troy Perkins’ net in the 4th minute. Seattle should have scored 2 minutes later, when Roger Levesque found Steve Zakuani unmarked in the box, but the winger scuffed his shot wide disapointingly.
United’s first chance was engineered by Academy product, Andy Najar. Najar collected the ball in space off of a clearance and played it through to Santino Quaranta. Quaranta turned and passed to Najar who had gotten behind the Seattle defense. The 17 year-old’s blistering shot was parried to safety well by Keller.
The fans also took a moment to honor Bryan Namoff, who earlier announced his retirement from the team due to post-concussion symptoms, by holding up signs that read 26, and chanting his name for the entirety of the minute. Responding to the fans encouragement, Stephen King rifled a shot on goal from long-range that was saved by a diving Keller.
Keller was once more the hero, when he saved another Najar shot, after the youngster had gotten free just outside the box. Seattle almost struck back soon after with Zakuani playing a give and go with Montero. Perkins smothered Zakuani’s shot impressively, and the ball trickled harmlessly out for a corner. The final chance of the half came from Jaime Moreno, whose header off an Andy Najar cross went just wide of Keller’s back post.
Second Half
The first chance of the half fell to Seattle after Jordan Graye headed a cross out for a corner kick. Zakuani’s corner kick found the head of central defender Patrick Ianni, but he blazed his header narrowly over the bar. Seattle continued to push forward in numbers, but D.C almost struck back off of a counter attack. The ball came out to Andy Najar, and the Honduran took the ball all the way to the touchline before striking the ball across the face of the goal. Keller was up to the task once again as he pushed the cross out of danger.
New signing, Pablo Hernandez, came on in the 56th minute, and was quickly involved in United’s best chance of the match. The pesky Najar beat an onrushing Keller to the ball, and laid it across to Hernandez who had a wide-open goal. Hernandez struck it on frame, but Patrick Ianni, who had rushed back into the net, got a head to it, and put it out for a corner.
New Designated Player Branko Boskovic made his debut shortly after, replacing Stephen King, but ultimately wasn’t able to put his stamp on the game. Seattle’s new Designated Player, Blaise N’kufo, didn’t feature, as Sigi Schmid opted to have the Swiss striker debut in front of the home fans.
Both teams pushed for the winner, which left gaps to be exploited on the counter attack. The breakthrough came just 1 minute from time, as Jordan Graye lost the ball near the box to Sanna Nyassi. Nyassi passed to Montero, who served a floating ball to the back post where an open Roger Levesque nodded Seattle into the lead and the win column.
United had one final chance, with Adam Cristman finding space behind the Sounders defense, but Kasey Keller, who thoroughly deserved his clean sheet, was able to claim the ball before the substitute could latch onto it.
