Seattle Sounders FC 1-1: David Ferreira Scores Sumptuous Equalizer At The Death

Hard-fought draw.

SEATTLE, Wash. -- With cautions flying all over the pitch and Seattle playing a man down in the second half, Dallas scored late in the match to salvage a draw on the road.

In front of 36,091 fans, Seattle Sounders FC (4-8-4) returned home for their first MLS home game since mid-June. With Freddie Ljungberg injured after tweaking his ankle at practice, head coach Sigi Schmid decided to shake up his lineup. Mike Seamon and Miguel Montano, two first-year players making their first MLS starts, entered at midfield.

FC Dallas (5-2-7) coach Schellas Hyndman continued to keep Jeff Cunningham in his doghouse. Last year’s Golden Boot winner is finding life difficult despite scoring 17 goals in 2009. He entered the match in the 64th minute and almost equalized.

Fredy Montero scored early in the match to give Seattle the lead. James Riley assisted on the goal. The Sounders went down a man with the sending off of Montano in the 56th minute. Dallas tied the score before the end of regulation time to tie the match on David Ferreira’s wonder strike.

First Half

FC Dallas forward Atiba Harris gave the visitors their first scoring chance in the fourth minute of play. Harris ran along the endline from the right corner flag and hit a bullet to the right post. Seattle ‘keeper Kasey Keller dove to the turf to make the stop and prevent Dallas from taking the early lead.

Defender George John made a costly mistake right before the 10 minute mark. He attempted a pass back to Dallas goalie Kevin Hartman. John’s backpass instead went directly to forward Fredy Montero positioned inside the box. Only an outstanding save by Hartman kept the match scoreless.

Montero notched his sixth goal of the year in the 14th minute. The Colombian received a cross from Riley from the left side of the pitch. The fullback lobbed a perfect ball to the waiting Montero to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Referee Kevin Stott issued his first of many cautions in the 34th minute. FC Dallas forward David Ferreira used a hard tackle to take down midfielder Nathan Sturgis midfielder in the middle of the pitch. Stott deemed the tackle to be harsh and issued a caution to Ferreira.

Dax McCarthy received a Ferreira cross from the right corner flag in the closing minutes of the half. His header sailed over the net to keep Dallas scoreless as the first 45 minutes of play came to an end.

Second Half

Midfielder Daniel Hernandez received the second yellow card of the match three minutes into the second half. The FC Dallas captain attempted a clearance with a high kick that came near Montero's face.

Less than four minutes later, Montero lifted the ball past two Dallas defenders to a streaking Steve Zakuani. The former number one draft sent the ball past Hartman towards the net, but defender Jair Benitez cleared the ball near the line to stop the threat.

On the counter attack, midfielder Bret Shea outraced the Sounders’ defense. He sent a hard shot towards the net that required a fine save by the veteran ‘keeper to maintain Seattle’s lead.

Fireworks erupted in the 56th minute when Shea and Miguel Montano tangled near the midfield touchline. As both players were tussling and falling to the ground, the young Colombian’s elbow clipped Shea in the head. The Sounders played short-handed the rest of the game when referee Stott sent Montano off with a red card, while the blonde Texan stayed in the match with a yellow.

Keller came up big in the 70th minute to keep the depleted Sounders in the lead. With Jeff Cunningham positioned on his right, the Seattle ‘keeper extended his right hand to prevent a goal on Cunningham’s low header to the left post.

Six minutes later, Montero lofted a pass from midfield to newly installed Sanna Nyassi running towards the penalty box. The Gambian outraced his defender and hit a low shot that required Hartman to use his right arm to prevent Seattle’s second goal.

Three minutes before the end of regulation, Ferreira equalized the match with his fourth goal of the year. The diminutive forward sent a short pass to Pearce to his right and received it back on a give-and-go. He used his left foot to send a cracker shot past a sprawling Keller to tie the match 1-1.

Seattle’s next match is back East where they will face D.C. United on Thursday. FC Dallas returns home on Saturday to play Western Conference rivals Real Salt Lake.
