Kansas City Wizards 0- 2 Chivas USA: Rare Away Win For The Goats
Justin Braun scores both goals to give Chivas USA the win.
By Isabel Navarro
Both the Kansas City Wizards and Chivas USA were desperate to earn some much needed points. The two struggling teams fought all night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark but the Goats emerged with all three points. Justin Braun scored his fifth and sixth goal of the season in the win.
The small field made it easier for both teams to continuously arrive to the goal post. This meant that the goalkeepers definitely had their work cut out for them.
First Half
The game started off feisty with lots of pushes and shoves. In the second minute the Wizards got their first corner kick. Josh Wolff took the kick and former Chivas USA defender Shavar Thomas shot it. Thornton rushed out of the net and jumped for the ball, landing on a Kansas City player after blocking the shot. Kei Kamara came to confront Thornton for hesitating to get off of the player. The players were eventually separated and the game continued.
From then on Thornton was tested several times but nothing he couldn’t easily handle. In the 10th minute Wolff blasted a ball that looked dangerous but it was too wide.
Although Chivas USA seamed to play with a lot more structure, the Wizards carved out the better chances. In the 14th minute Davy Arnaud shot a ball at the Goat’s net but again Thornton jumped up and caught the ball. This time when Thornton landed he was in obvious pain. Though it looked like he might have to make way, the 36-year-old eventually got back up and into position.
Both teams were chasing after the ball but no one really dominated proceedings. Thornton continued to be tested but he blocked all attempts by the Wizards. In the 33rd minute Thornton used his entire body as a shield to block a Wolff shot on goal. Thornton was in noticeable pain and decided to leave the field; Dan Kennedy came in as his substitution.
As soon as Kennedy settled in his position he immediately blocked a blast from the Wizards. Both teams showed good defense. Jimmy Nielson was not really tested by the Goats in the opening half. In the last few minutes of the first half both teams looked tired and anxious for halftime.

Second Half
Right out of the gate the Goats made it to the post but were rejected by Nielsen. Both teams seemed to have gotten one hell of a pep talk because they both made shots on goal within the first minute, neither shot resulting in a goal.
In the 57th minute Blair Gavin was substituted out for Osael Romero. Then two minutes later, Braun blasted a ball past Nielsen to give the visitors the lead. The Wizards decided to fight back and started to push for the equalizer. The Wizards got back-to-back corner kicks which were both deflected by Kennedy.
In the 60th minute Ben Zemanski commited a foul on Kamara, giving the Wizards a free kick in a dangerous zone. Arnaud took the set piece and blasted it way over the post. Then in the 66th minute the Wizards made their first substitution, Graham Zusi in for Jack Jewsbury. A little after that the Wizards made their best play of the night and almost scored but the ball hit the crossbar.
The Goats last substitution was Dario Delgado for Jesus Padilla, and then right after the Wizards sent in Teal Bunbury for Josh Wolff. In the 74th minute the first card of the night was issued to Romero who recklessly fouled Kamara. In the 80th minute Kamara’s fifth shot on goal was denied by a save from Kennedy.
A few minutes after Braun stumbled back onto the field following a foul from Jimmy Conrad, he scored his second goal of the night. Braun went up against two Kansas City players and kicked the ball past a helpless Nielsen.
In the 90th minute it looked as though Braun would complete his hat trick but Nielsen denied him.
