Los Angeles Galaxy vs. New England Revolution: Head to Head Preview
The in-form Galaxy travel to out-of-form New England for a Saturday night matchup.
By Jonathan Vera and Steve Stoehr
On Form
Los Angeles Galaxy, by Jonathan Vera: They're back.....yes ladies and gentlemen, Galaxy soccer aces Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle are back from their national duty overseas and continued right where they left off. LA were in a bit of a mini downward spiral after suffering a their first defeat by the Royalty of Salt Lake City and enduring a scoreless draw against the Reds, but with the return of the "dynamic duo" the Galaxy have gone back to their winning ways.
New England Revolution, by Steve Stoehr: Nothing about the New England Revolution is on form at the moment. The Revs followed up a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Chicago by traveling to Salt Lake City and letting the Claret and Cobalt run roughshod all over them. Giving up five goals is problem enough; getting shut out in the process is worse than embarrassing. If there’s anything positive coming from Revs camp it’s the imminent return of defender Darrius Barnes from injury. He’ll be available for the match, though most likely from the bench.
Off Target
Galaxy: The defensive line took a punch to the labonza this week when the league suspended Omar Gonzalez for one game. In the RSL showdown last month, Todd Dunivant was booked in the 84th minute, but after close observation of the tapes, which apparently took one month, Gonzalez turned out to be the true culprit and was charged. This marked his fifth booking this year, so he will sit out this weekend's match against the Revs.
Revolution: Everything. In all honesty there is nothing going right for this squad and anyone looking for problems is faced with an overwhelming smorgasbord of possible targets. Focus has been on the Revs’ offensive woes (3rd worst in the league in goals scored) but the defense has done anything but pick up the slack. The Revolution have the second worst team goals-against average in the league with 1.86. The five-goal shellacking from RSL wasn’t the first time the Revs have conceded far too many goals for comfort and if it continues, they’ll be propping up the league table come Fall.
Tactics
Galaxy: The key to last week's success against the Sounders was coming out hard and strong with a relentless attack on the pitch. Coach Bruce Arena must stress that upon his squad again versus New England. Gonzalez may be out, but those shoes could be easily filled by A.J. De la Garza, Bryan Jordan, or even Leonardo. Expect a 4-4-2 formation with Buddle and Tristan Bowen leading the charge.
Revolution: Last week Steve Nicol stuck with the 4-5-1 that generated so many unfinished chances against Chicago and was rewarded with an impotent display in which they were outshot (24/10 – 10/4) and out-cornered (11-2), not to mention outscored (5-0). Will this mean a shift back to the 4-4-2? At this point it could mean anything; the Revs have yet to find a winning formula and it should surprise no one if Nicol continues to shuffle things around while looking for one.
Galaxy: The visiting team will be dealing with an array of issues come game day. One: they will be missing Omar Gonzalez in the backline due to suspension. Two: this will be their third game in eight days and they will be battling fatigue (they lost to the Sounders Wednesday night in the US Cup after beating them Sunday in league play). Three: Landon Donovan will most likely not be there. After Sunday's match there was some talk about possibly resting the midfielder, but on Monday Donovan wrote on his Facebook page, "time for some much needed rest, I'll be back in a week or so." The Revs have been slumping all season, sp this may be an opportunity to rest Donovan.
Revolution: New England do appear to produce their best performances at home, so if there’s any intangible that can be quantified for this fixture, it’s The Fort. Schilawski has only ever scored at home, and the Revs’ best-played match (the 4-1 win over Toronto) happened at Gillette. With The Rebellion, the Midnight Riders, and the Rev Army behind them, New England may at least be able to prevent total humiliation as they face the league’s form squad.
Outcome
Galaxy: Though the Galaxy find themselves in an unfavored predicament, they still have Edson Buddle at the helm and an array of talent on the bench, not to mention the fact that they'll be facing a struggling New England club. Much to New England's chagrin, LA takes it 2-0.
Revolution: The Galaxy are probably the best team in the league at the moment, and with Buddle and Donovan back and apparently unaffected by their trip to South Africa, they figure to continue steamrolling through the league. Unfortunately, in their current condition, the Revolution will likely be an undetected speed bump along the way. Hopefully, the Revs will put on a respectable showing in front of their home fans but it won’t be enough to prevent yet another loss. The Galaxy take this 3-1.
