On Form
Toronto FC, by Mike Beauvais: The Reds were able to break out of their horrible goalless streak that almost reached three matches last Thursday thanks to a timely marker from Dan Gargan. With the specter of their six-match unbeaten streak (and 14-match home unbeaten run) coming to an abrupt end hanging over their heads, TFC fought back and were able to get a precious equalizer. It was obvious that frustration was setting in for Toronto, yet the club was able to settle down, press forward, and preserve their impressive runs.
Colorado Rapids, by Avery Raimondo: The Rapids after a rain-drenched draw at home against the New York Red Bulls are unbeaten in six matches. Besides for a gaffe by Drew Moor that allowed a Juan Pablo Angel equalizer, the defense that has allowed in a mere five goals during the stretch was once again solid. The backline limited the chances seen by the NY attack that scored three in the match prior and goalkeeper Matt Pickens was equally prepared for any blemishes of his defense except for Angel’s goal.
Off Target
Toronto FC: As good as golden oldie Pat Onstad was in the Houston net, the Reds should have beaten the Dynamo soundly by virtue of the sheer number of quality chances they had. While the headlines were all about the goalless streak being over, Gargan’s goal belied a real problem: the fact that TFC seems to have forgotten how to finish. A single goal in three home matches is simply unacceptable for a club with playoff aspirations. New signing, former Valencia hitman Mista, will be expected to ease the burden on the club’s current forward corps, but he’s unavailable until next week when the transfer window opens. TFC also hopes that the former Spanish international might reinvigorate Julian de Guzman, who was a teammate of Mista’s at Deportivo during the 2008-2009 campaign. For now, the club will have to trust that the industry and workrate of Chad Barrett, which has been there all season, will translate into more goals, Dwayne De Rosario will begin to find the back of the net again, and O’Brian White will snap out of an apparent sophomore jinx. You can argue that it’s still only July, but in a league where every point counts, TFC is already on the clock, and they simply cannot afford to drop any more points against a Rapids side who just toyed with the Reds in their previous encounter in April.
Rapids: Dampening the recent streak is the fact that Colorado has drawn their last three matches when they had chances to take full advantage of them. Rather than keeping pace with Real Salt Lake for second place in the Western Conference, the Rapids are now only a point out of FC Dallas’ reach.

Tactics
Toronto FC: When TFC travelled to Colorado in April, the Rapids used their speed and physical play to win two penalties by goading the Reds into getting too aggressive. Conor Casey converted both in a 3-1 Rapids win. Playing a side like Colorado requires the right combination of physicality and restraint and Preki must be mindful of this in picking his XI. Two of his likely starters in the midfield, De Guzman and Gambian hardman Amadou Sanyang, are both unavailable due to red cards picked up versus Houston. Martin Saric might be handed a start in their stead, but the Argentine has proven to be reckless at times, something that can’t be tolerated on Saturday.
Rapids: Gary Smith’s will be forced to adjust his usual 4-5-1 because of “a long-standing glitch” with Mehdi Ballouchy’s international paperwork that doesn’t allow him to travel outside the country according to the Rapids’ website. The Moroccan will be difficult to replace; Colorado is bereft of another playmaker that controls the match tempo as capably. Possible choices depending how Smith adjusts his lineup could be Ross Labeaux, Colin Clark, or even the elusive Claudio Lopez.
Intangibles
Toronto FC: It’s no secret that Preki hasn’t exactly been enamored with MLS officiating this season and last week ran afoul of referee Jair Marrufo. It will be interesting to see if the lively TFC manager will once again blow his top if he adjudges the refereeing to be below his satisfaction and if that will have any consequences for his players on the pitch.
Rapids: This time last year, Marvell Wynne was defending for Toronto. Since his move to the Mile-High City, Wynne has settled nicely into the Colorado backline. Keep your eye out for the first selection in the 2006 SuperDraft’s reaction to returning to Canada.
Prediction
Toronto FC: The Rapids will come into Toronto and steal a road point, resigning the Reds to their fourth consecutive draw, 1-1.
Rapids: All indications from Colorado’s past games and the recent results at BMO point to a draw. I’ll play it safe by predicting a goal to both sides with Colorado’s lone score going to the dangerous Omar Cummings.
