Fulham 1-1 Aston Villa: Brede Hangeland Scores Stoppage Time Header To Salvage A Point

Defender nets to save Mark Hughes' side.

By Jamie Dunn at Craven Cottage

A stoppage time header from Brede Hangeland handed Fulham a late equalizer against Aston Villa at Craven Cottage

Gerard Houllier’s side were handed the double injury blow of losing John Carew and Emile Heskey in the build-up to the game, but led through Marc Albrighton’s neat first half finish.

Fulham went close through second half substitute Andrew Johnson in the second half, but could not find a way past Brad Friedel until the Norwegian stooped in at the death to head home.

It took Aston Villa only a minute to have their first chance on goal as they broke through Marc Albrighton, who found Stewart Downing, but his shot was blocked by a fantastic piece of defending from Carlos Salcido.

But Fulham responded immediately and could have gone in front seconds later, as Clint Dempsey found Simon Davies on the left hand side, but Zoltan Gera could only head the Welshman’s cross into Brad Friedel’s grasp.

Albrighton, who has made a starting place in the Villa team his own this season, was a constant threat on the right wing and his cross found Delfouneso after 15 minutes, but the young striker’s header sailed wide.

Fulham will feel they should have gone ahead shortly after as two great chances went begging. First Gera, who looked offside, was played in by a lovely disguise pass from Dempsey, but he fluffed his effort wide. The battle of the Americas continued as Dempsey saw a low shot of his own from inside the area saved low down by Friedel, who then watched Gera’s rebound volley over the bar.

The home side began to dominate the game as the half grew older and after 20 minutes Davies was presented with another chance to find Gera by some excellent work from Dembele, but his cross let an otherwise smart move down.

Villa needed to get a grip on the game in midfield as Dempsey, Gera and Davies pressed forward, but their cause was not helped by the loss of Nigel Reo-Coker, who fell awkwardly after challenging in the air with Jonathan Greening.

Fulham continued to carve the better chances out though and Dembele could have given his side the lead, receiving a nod down from Gera, but blasting over from 12 yards.

It was the visitors who would have the last chance of the half though, and it proved to be an all-important one, as Albrighton collected a long pass from Bannan, touched the ball around Salcido and side-footed beyond Schwarzer into the bottom right hand corner of Schwarzer’s net with four first half minutes to play.

Chances were at a premium after the break and it took Villa just short of ten minutes to create an opening, as Delfouneso found himself with plenty of time and space, but shot tamely at Schwarzer.

Fulham were chasing the game, and Mark Hughes was forced into an attacking substitution as Andrew Johnson replaced Greening, while Stephen Kelly was introduced in place of Chris Baird at full back.

Johnson was unable to have an immediate impact on the game though, and Hughes was forced into his final change of the game with 20 minutes of normal time remaining, as Mexico's Salcido limped off to be replaced by Damien Duff.

Villa could have put the game to bed shortly after, as Downing passed to Albrighton on the edge of the area, but the winger judged his shot poorly and found row Z behind the goal.

The visitors were nearly made to pay for the miss in the 74th minute as Johnson was presented with the opportunity to shoot, but Friedel was equal to his effort and saved low down.

Johnson was presented with another chance when Dempsey again opened up the defense with a clever ball. Johnson looked to equalize as he attempted to round Friedel in the closing stages, but the American was equal to him and must have thought he had ensured he would leave with Craven Cottage with a clean sheet.

It wasn’t to be though, as Hangeland rose to meet a late free-kick and equalize with what proved to be practically the last touch of the game, leaving Friedel and company wondering how such a fine defensive performance could slip away.
