Valencia win Aggregate 5 - 3

Live Commentary

  • The Spanish side join Juventus, Sevilla and Benfica in the last four, and the confidence they will gain from this could carry them all the way to the final. I've been Tom Maston and thanks for joining me.
  • The final whistle blows and Valencia have done it. Paco's hat-trick will claim the headlines, but this was a fantastic team performance. There are tears on the pitch and Basel don't know quite what's hit them.
  • 118'
    Goal Juan Bernat
GOAL!!! All over now, and Bernat has a deserved goal for a tireless display. The ball somehow finds it's way through to him on the edge of the box, and he finishes with aplomb across Sommer's body. Valencia are heading for the semi-finals.
  • 116'
    Yellow Card Guaita
  • 116'
    SubstitutionBehrang Safari B. Embolo
  • 116'
One last throw of the dice from Yakin as Embolo replaces Safari.
  • 115'
    Yellow Card Juan Bernat
  • 115'
Bernat picks up a booking for a trip as Basel now look to pour forward.
  • 114'
    Yellow Card Paco Alcácer
  • 113'
    Assist Pablo Piatti
  • 113'
    Goal Paco Alcácer
HAT-TRICK!!! Finally Sommer is beaten, and Paco has done it! Piatti has acres to cross to the near post from the left, and the striker only has to tap in at the near post. He picks up a booking for tearing off his shirt in celebration.
  • 112'
Appeals for a penalty from the home fans as Parejo goes down in the box, but the Hungarian referee correctly waves for him to get back up.
  • 110'
JUST WIDE! Die cannot believe this has missed. The midfielder picks it up 40 yards from goal, drives forward before hitting a shot that is deflected narrowly wide. Meanwhile Pereira is replaced by Piatti.
  • 109'
    SubstitutionJoão Pereira Pablo Piatti
  • 108'
Jonas tries his luck from distance again but it is always too high and Sommer can watch the swerving effort go over the bar.
  • 106'
    Yellow Card Taulant Xhaka
  • 106'
Xhaka now picks up a yellow card for blocking of Bernat. Almost the whole Basel side have gone into the book now.
  • 106'
Basel get us back underway for the final 15 minutes...
  • 105' + 10'
The referee blows for the end of the first half of extra-time, and somehow Basel's nine men are still in this. Sommer has kept them in it on his own.
  • 105' + 1'
    Yellow/Red Gastón Sauro
WHAT A SAVE! Sommer is on fire as a cross in from the right is met by Paco, but the goalkeeper does well to get across to his near post to turn it wide. RED CARD! What are Basel doing? Sauron picks up his second yellow card in a minute as he trips Feghouli in midfield and now the Swiss side must hold on with nine men.
  • 104'
    Yellow Card Gastón Sauro
  • 104'
    Yellow Card Edu Vargas
  • 104'
Sauro and Vargas have also picked up a booking apiece for an off the ball incident.
  • 103'
Jonas has been quiet since replacing Fede, but he goes close as he cuts inside onto his right foot but his shot is off target as he looks to beat Sommer at his near post.
  • 102'
The volume has lifted again inside the stadium, and Pereira gets forward again to cross for Vargas. Paco doesn't read it though and his flick on takes the ball out of play.
  • 101'
    Red Card Marcelo Díaz
RED CARD! Basel are down to ten men thanks to a brainless piece of football from Diaz. The midfielder kicks out at Costa as he looks to run past him and that is pure stupidity. The Swiss side have it all on now to hold out.
  • 98'
    Yellow Card Seydou Keita
Keita picks up a yellow card as he catches Die with the Ivorian carrying the ball forward.
  • 96'
Die and Sio have looked dangerous when they combine for Basel, but the latter is denied by an offside flag this time. The visitors have carried very little goal threat this evening.
  • 94'
GREAT SAVE! Sommer is at it again. A pull-back from the left-hand side finds Parejo in plenty of room, but his side-footed effort is kept out by the goalkeeper's feet. He then does well to collect the resulting corner.
  • 93'
Yet again Valencia are the side to start brightly and get the ball forward down the right-hand side. Basel are going to start to tire here you'd fancy.
  • 91'
Valencia kick-off and we are back underway...
  • 90' + 5'
The two teams are almost ready to get going again. Thirty minutes to try and separate these two sides...
  • 90' + 4'
The full time whistle blows, and we will have extra-time at the Mestalla. That is the least Valencia deserve for their peformance, and I'll be back in five minutes for the resumption.
  • 90' + 3'
WIDE! Sauro gets up highest to meet it but he can't get the direction on the header and it floats harmlessly wide.
  • 90' + 2'
Basel are actually playing their best football of the night, and Die wins a free-kick from Costa around 40 yards from goal. Diaz will look to float it into the box...
  • 90'
Valencia have to be careful as Die plays a ball over the top for Sio but Pereira gets across well to deal with it. Into three minutes of stoppage time...
  • 88'
BRILLIANT GOALKEEPING! Sommer keeps up his fantastic showing as Paco runs through on goal after Schar miscontrols. The striker should score but the goalkeeper stays big to smother his effort. Vargas then slides the rebound against the post, though the referee blows for a foul on Sommer.
  • 87'
Diaz attempts the implausible as he spots Guaita off his line and shoots from the halfway line. Fortunately for the goalkeeper the ball is always going wide.
  • 86'
Basel just cannot keep the ball at all and Valencia are just coming forward in waves. They are yet to test Sommer since pulling the tie level, however.
  • 84'
Valencia are throwing everything at this one, with Bernat and Feghouli both putting some excellent balls into the box that Basel are just about dealing with. If they hang on and take it to extra-time it will be quite an achievement.
  • 81'
    SubstitutionJérémy Mathieu Ricardo Costa
Costa is the man to come on and replace Mathieu.
  • 80'
The defender has tried to carry on, but it looks as if he will now have to be replaced. A shame after a fine showing from the Frenchman.
  • 78'
A little concern here for Valencia as Mathieu stays down after a challenge from Die. The skipper should be fine to continue though.
  • 76'
    SubstitutionFederico Nicolás Cartabia Jonas
Valencia make their first change of the night as Fede is replaced by Jonas. The winger has been excellent on the left-hand side.
  • 74'
    Yellow Card Marcelo Díaz
Diaz picks up Basel's fourth booking as he asks for Keita to be booked as he is tripped by the midfielder.
  • 72'
The home side now have just less than 20 minutes to find a winner, though if it stays like this we will head to extra-time. Basel have no recognised strikers on the field, so they are staying in defensive mode.
  • 70'
    Assist Edu Vargas
  • 70'
    Goal Paco Alcácer
GOAL!!! Valencia have done it! It's a superb strike to level the tie up as a long ball forward is held up by Vargas, and Paco runs onto it to smash an effort into the top corner from the edge of the area. Basel do not know what has hit them.
  • 68'
Some pinball around the Valencia box sees Parejo's shot blocked before Pereira volleys over the top from 25 yards. Basel can barely get out of their own half.
  • 66'
SUPER SAVE! Basel remain ahead in the tie, but they owe much of that to Sommer. Paco robs Frei before cutting onto his right foot 20 yards from goal. His curling effort looks destined to land in the top corner, but somehow the goalkeeper gets the slightest of touches to tip it onto the crossbar.
  • 65'
    Yellow Card Fabian Schaer
Schar needlessly dives in on Vargas from behind and he rightly picks up a yellow card.
  • 64'
SIDE NETTING! Sio wins a free-kick on the right wing and Diaz tries to surprise Guaita by going for goal, but the shot is never going in and lands in the side netting.
  • 62'
    Yellow Card Mohamed Elneny
El Neny is penalised for pulling back Parejo in midfield and he picks up a yellow card.
  • 61'
    SubstitutionDavid Degen Naser Aliji
Basel make their second change of the match as Degen is replaced by Aliji in a slightly defensive change.
  • 60'
Some concern for Basel as Sauro stays down after blocking that Mathieu chance, and he has to be helped from the field. He does look, though, that he is going to try and carry on.
  • 58'
Since those Vargas chances the crowd have been lifted again, and Mathieu almost gets on the end of a Keita header but cannot stretch quite enough to send it goalwards.
  • 56'
Safari is slightly fortunate as he brings down Feghouli but the referee keeps his cards in his pocket this time. The full-back is already on a yellow card and must be on his last chance.
  • 54'
OFF THE POST! Somehow Basel survive as Sommer does well to parry an effort from Vargas before the striker manages to get on the end of the rebound, but he can only fire against the post from a tight angle. I'm not sure Valencia know how they've missed that.
  • 53'
SubstitutionMatias Emilio Delgado Giovanni-Guy Yann Sio
Basel make their first change as Delgado, the hero of the first leg, is replaced by Sio up front for the visitors.
  • 52'
There does seem to be a little more patience to Valencia's play in the second half, though the tempo is yet to really drop.
  • 50'
All one way traffic at the moment, though the home side are yet to test Sommer in this second half. Basel do seem to have reorganised and regrouped at the break.
  • 48'
As expected, Valencia have come back out the blocks quickly, with Fede heavily involved on the left-hand side. Expect he and Feghouli to get plenty of balls into the box in this second half.
  • 46'
Basel kick-off and immediately lose the ball. Can they hold onto their narrow lead?
  • The two teams have made their way back onto the field are we are ready to get back underway...
  • Basel have looked solid up until Paco broke the deadlock, and Yakin now has a big job to do to reorganise his troops. I'll be back in ten minutes to see if they can hold on.
  • No stoppage time at the end of the first half and the half-time whistle blows. The home fans are in buoyant mood and know they are well on their way to making history. Valencia are suddenly the favourites to progress.
  • 44'
Basel look like they don't know what has hit them and are making all sorts of mistakes. To clear up that earlier Sommer save, the goalkeeper somehow kept out a Vargas head from close range after a superb Paco cross. Valencia then scored from the resulting corner.
  • 42'
    Assist Federico Nicolás Cartabia
  • 42'
    Goal Edu Vargas
GOAL!!! The Mestalla is rocking, and just seconds after Sommer pulls off a remarkable save to deny Vargas, the striker gets on the end of a Parejo corner to head into the top corner. Suddenly the home fans believe.
  • 40'
Valencia's tails are up, and Fede shows some quick feet to get a cross in from the left that is just behind Feghouli. Basel need to get to half-time just one goal in arrears and regroup.
  • 38'
    Assist João Pereira
  • 38'
    Goal Paco Alcácer
GOAL!!! Finally Valencia find something in the final third as Pereira plays a lovely ball in behind for Paco, and the striker does well to chest it down and volley home. The fightback is on!
  • 36'
The home side work a free-kick on the right-hand side to Pereira, but his cross is again woeful as it floats over all the bodies in the box and Basel again get it clear.
  • 34'
Valencia continue to huff and puff as Pereira gets forward down the right but his cross is very poor and Sauro heads clear. Balls into the box aren't working for the hosts.
  • 32'
Schar and Sauro are looking very strong at the heart of the Basel defence and Valencia seem to have little idea as to how and pick their way through. You sense the hosts need a piece of individual brilliance to spark this tie into life.
  • 30'
Pereira has to be alert at the back as a crossfield pass almost finds Degen on the Basel left, but the full-back just about does enough to keep the ball away from the winger.
  • 28'
Valencia just aren't being careful enough around the box, with Vargas this time looking for Paco, but the strikers aren't quite on the same wavelength and the ball runs through to Sommer.
  • 27'
    Yellow Card Sofiane Feghouli
There is a little bit of needle in this game, with Feghouli and Safari getting involved with each other once again. This time the Valencia man is booked though it seems as if he may already have been fouled himself.
  • 24'
    Yellow Card Behrang Safari
Safari picks up the first booking of the match as he reacts angrily to a free-kick being given against him for a foul on Feghouli.
  • 22'
Valencia somehow work the ball into Pereira's path after Vargas' pass deflected, and the full back manages to flick the ball goalwards with the outside of his foot. Sauro does well, however, to block, though the full-back may have done better had he attempted the shot with his left-foot.
  • 21'
Delgado gets into the game for the first time as he forces a corner, but his own delivery into the area is poor and Valencia get it clear.
  • 19'
Feghouli looks to show some quick feet on the right-hand side and get to the byline, but his final ball is a poor one as he slices it out of play for a goal kick.
  • 17'
Basel's failure to hold onto the ball for any great length of time is putting them under increasing pressure, and Yakin will be keen for his players to show more composure or they risk burning out as they chase the home players.
  • 15'
Feghouli finds some space deep on the right-hand side and can pick a man out in the middle. Vargas is his target but the striker doesn't read it and the ball dribbles harmlessly out for a goal kick.
  • 13'
There is a good tempo to this game, and Valencia are doing their best to impose themselves on the game. They are yet to test Sommer as yet with Basel just about holding firm.
  • 11'
JUST OVER! Basel have the first real shot on goal as Die cuts inside onto his right foot 25 yards from goal before striking a powerful effort that flies just over Guaita's crossbar.
  • 9'
Basel do look a little twitchy at the back, and Sommer is almost in trouble again as he takes one touch too many and is almost tackled by Vargas inside his own box. In the end the goalkeeper just about gets it clear.
  • 7'
A Parejo free-kick swung into the area from the left causes confusion in the Basel box as Schar takes the ball out of Sommer's hands and out for a corner. Fortunately for the visitors the resulting set-piece is poor and they can clear.
  • 5'
Basel threaten for the first time as Delgado feeds Diaz down the right-hand side, but as he looks for Degen in the box, Fuego gets back well to head away.
  • 3'
Unsurprisingly, Valencia have started proceedings on the front foot, though some poor touches from their forward players have meant they are to threaten the Swiss side in the final third.
  • 1'
Valencia kick-off and we are underway in Estadio de Mestalla...
  • The pre-match niceties are over and we are ready for this quarter-final second leg to get underway.
  • As the two teams make their way out onto the field, the fans that have made their way into the stadium are doing their best to create an atmosphere. The Valencia players will be hoping they can keep those supporters in buoyant mood throughout the night.
  • One thing that does not bode well for Valencia is that Basel are yet to concede in their five matches in the Europa League this season, so they will have to do something special to break the deadlock this evening. The players are in the tunnel as we approach kick-off.
  • Few are expecting Valencia to fight their way back into this tie, but if they are to cut the deficit, then Sofiane Feghouli could prove crucial. The winger has the ability to unlock defences, and if he can run at Safari then the hosts may well make history.
  • There are just over ten minutes until kick-off in the Mestalla, but there are very few fans inside the stadium at present. Unsurprisingly not many supporters are confident of the home side pulling back the deficit, though there is still time for fans to make their way in.
  • Basel are also without some key players, with Stocker and Phillipp Degen both injured while Marek Suchy is suspended.
  • Valencia are without a host of senior players, with Diego Alves, Philippe Senderos and Victor Ruiz all unavailable through injury. They do receive a boost though. with captain Ricardo Costa fit enough to take his place on the bench after an ankle knock.
  • Basel: Sommer; Xhaka, Schar, Sauro, Safari; El Neny, Die, Diaz, Degen; Frei, Delgado.
  • Valencia: Guaita; Pereira, Fuego, Mathieu, Bernat; Feghouli, Parejo, Keita, Cartabia; Paco, Vargas.
  • Before we go any further, the two team line-ups are in ahead of kick-off...
  • Valencia have not won in their last four matches, and their season is in danger of petering out with their league form also in decline. It is looking likely that Juan Antonio Pizzi's side will miss out on European competition next season, so the home fans will hope that they can keep their continental adventure going for at least two matches.
  • A brace from Matias Delgado and a late strike from Valentin Stocker have given Murat Yakin's a side a healthy lead to defend in tonight's fixture, and with no side having overturned a three-goal deficit in Europa League history, the visitors will head into the fixture confident of progress in the competition.
  • Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Europa League quarter-final second leg between Valencia and Basel. The Swiss side have a 3-0 lead from the first leg, and the Liga outfit will need to make Europa League history to advance to the last four. I'm Tom Maston and I'll be guiding you through all the action from Estadio de Mestalla.
