The Argentine scored three times in a wild affair at BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday evening.
RSL got off to an incredibly quick start after Morales scored the fourth fastest goal in MLS history. Alvaro Saborio laid the ball off to Morales, who sent a tremendous chip over Tally Hall and into the far corner from 25 yards out.
The teams then traded goals off corner kicks in a five-minute span. First, Morales finished on the doorstep and then Mark Sherrod grabbed his first MLS goal with a header from a Brad Davis out-swinger.
Houston’s day got far more difficult 27 minutes in when a dangerous lunge by Servando Carrasco on Morales drew a straight red card from referee Allen Chapman.
It only took five minutes for the 10-man Dynamo to be punished. Luke Mulholland whipped in a cross from the right and Saborio did well to glance a header across his body and into the far corner.
Houston got a chance to get back into the match only minutes later, but Nick Rimando saved Giles Barnes’ poor penalty kick after Aaron Maund was called for a push in the box.
Despite being down a man, Houston got right back into the match 10 minutes into the second half. Sherrod took advantage of a RSL turnover in its own half to drive a low shot into the near post.
Houston pressed for an equalizer but RSL took the sting out of the game with 13 minutes left when Mulholland was played through the Houston defense. The Englishman rounded Hall and finished from a narrow angle.
With just minutes to play, Morales rounded off his hat trick from the penalty spot after Hall fouled Devon Sandoval in the box.
