Borussia Dortmund win Aggregate 5 - 4

Live Commentary

  • That's all that we have time for, but we hope that you enjoyed Zenit's impressive 2-1 win against Dortmund in the knockout stages of the Champions League, redeeming themselves from the first leg. I've been Simon Harrison, and I hope to see you all again next time.
  • Kehl popped up with the important goal for the hosts, which gave Semak's men little hope of turning the aggregate score around. Plenty of positives for the away side, but it won't be they who progress further in the competition.
  • FULL TIME! Zenit win at Signal Iduna Park, but it will be Dortmund who progress into the next round of the Champions League, after a tightly contested 2-1 home defeat. A screamer from Hulk and a smart header from Rondon gave the Russian outfit a deserved win, as Dortmund spent the evening looking defensively uninspiring.
  • 90' + 2'
Hubocan is desperately trying to get back onto the field, after having his head patched up with bandages, but the fourth official won't allow him back on the field as his shirt is drenched in blood.
  • 90' + 1'
    SubstitutionPierre-Emerick Aubameyang Jonas Hofmann
  • 90' + 1'
There are three minutes of stoppage time for Zenit to find the two goals required to take this tie to extra time. Stranger things have happened!
  • 90'
Hubocan going down heavily, after clashing knees with Lewandowski, before the Zenit defender landed oddly. It was a fairly innocuous challenge, but Hubocan doesn't look good here at all, he's got blood all over his shirt and face. Hofmann takes to the field in place of Aubameyang while Dortmund wait.
  • 89'
SHATOV! The Russia international robs Sahin of the ball far too easily, before being permitted to shoot from 25 yards. Weidenfeller is able to claim easily, but is absolutely furious with his defenders, they've not been at the races in this second half.
  • 88'
A good defensive header from Sokratis prevents a clever clipped pass from Danny reaching substitute Smolnikov. Witsel is then fed possession, takes a positive touch out of his feet, before firing a low drive towards the bottom left corner. Weidenfeller touches it around the post, but Zenit make nothing of the set piece.
  • 86'
Five minutes left on the clock, and two goals are looking unlikely for the away side. Regardless, Signal Iduna Park is rather nervous, possibly due to the manner in which Zenit got their opening goal, out of absolutely nowhere.
  • 84'
    SubstitutionViktor Faizulin Igor Smolnikov
  • 84'
Dortmund are happy to sit back and allow Zenit to press forward in the late stages, looking to absorb whatever tired jabs the visitors have left to throw. Hulk is racing around, looking to inspire his team to an unlikely aggregate victory, and his free-kick from range is cleared well by Sokratis.
  • 82'
Zenit continue to press forward in search of another goal, with the pace of Rondon being useful for the side trailing on aggregate. Weidenfeller is able to race off his line to claim another through ball, as another attempted search for the Venezuelan comes to nothing.
  • 80'
Klopp looks anxious in his technical area, as he knows what a precarious position his side are in. Rondon and Hulk possess great pace, and Sokratis does brilliantly to slide in and prevent the former from going through one-on-one with Weidenfeller. Top defending!
  • 78'
As we edge towards the final ten minutes in this game, Zenit's urgency might just kick up another notch. Semak's side need two goals to take this game to extra-time, and given Dortmund's shaky defensive performance, they just might fancy themselves. With the pacey options Klopp has at his disposal on the field, however, the hosts are more than capable of exploiting Zenit on the break.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionMarcel Schmelzer Erik Durm
  • 76'
Schmelzer leaves the field for Dortmund, and heads straight down the tunnel, as the left-back presumably has some kind of injury complaint. Young full-back Durm takes to the field, and he's shown this season that he's more than capable of holding his own, especially when pressing forward.
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Miloš Jojić
  • 75'
A quarter of an hour left, and Zenit fans might be forgiven for starting to believe! After their abject defensive performance at home in the first leg, Villas-Boas might be optimistic about his side's chances of kicking on and finishing their season well, with the trio behind Rondon and the back four playing particularly well.
  • 73'
    Assist Domenico Criscito
  • 73'
    Goal Rondón
GOOOOOAL! RONDON BUNDLES HOME TO MAKE IT 2-1 TO THE VISITORS! A good cross is clipped over Hummels, with the substitute peeling off his man well, before stooping to flick the ball beyond Weidenfeller from close range with his forehead! Game on!
  • 72'
Jojic and Grosskreutz combine well on the edge of the penalty area, before the ball is zipped into the feet of Lewandowski. The Dortmund forward is quickly crowded out once again, however, as Zenit continue to look solid.
  • 71'
Yet another Dortmund corner, and Malafeev does just enough to beat the wall away from the onrushing Lewandowski. He's not looked comfortable all game, which can perhaps be expected from a goalkeeper who hasn't seen first time action for eight months.
  • 69'
    SubstitutionHenrikh Mkhitaryan Miloš Jojić
  • 69'
So nearly an own goal from Hubocan, as the centre-half's attempted clearance ends up going backwards towards goal! It bobbles past the near post with Malafeev rooted to the spot. The resulting corner is cleared well, however.
  • 68'
Terrible free-kick from Aubameyang. In Reus' absence, the former St Etienne man tries his luck, but strikes the wall. The rebound falls to a Dortmund player, and the ball is whipped into the centre of the area, but once again Zenit remain resilient.
  • 66'
Lewandowski continues to not have much luck against Hubocan and Neto, with the Russian side looking solid. Neither goalkeeper has had a great deal to do in this second half, with much of the ball remaining in the midfield third. Both outfits struggling to break each other down, or find that morsel of inspiration.
  • 64'
Clever idea from Lewandowski! The Poland international wins his aerial battle, before bringing the ball down on his chest. Piszczek makes a diagonal run inside him, before the Bayern-bound forward, tries to flick an intelligent backheel into the path of his compatriot, but Neto is there to clear.
  • 62'
    SubstitutionAleksandr Kerzhakov Rondón
  • 62'
Important clearance from Piszczek! The Polish full-back backheel's a deep cross away from danger, despite Shatov steaming in at the back post to try and meet the ball with his head. Aubameyang is then caught late, but looks fine to continue after a brief breather.
  • 61'
Half an hour left to play, and both coaches might just be beginning to take glances at the options on their subs benches. If Klopp wants another calming goal, he could call upon Jojic, the Serbian has scored twice when coming off the bench, the most recent of which being against Gladbach on the weekend.
  • 59'
AUBAMEYANG! Awful clearance from Hubocan, who skews his clearance straight to the feet of the Gabon international. He takes a touch out of his feet, before arrowing a 25 yard effort narrowly over Malafeev's crossbar, though it was always rising.
  • 58'
Witsel has looked much better tonight than in the first leg, as the Belgium international has played plenty of clever passes to change the pace of Zenit's breaks, as well as offering himself as an option far more often. Dortmund stand firm despite the away side's continued pressure.
  • 56'
Another bizarre decision from Malafeev, who isn't returning to the Zenit fold in particular style. He holds onto the ball for the too long, before being closed down, and is forced to give Criscito the ball in an insecure area. Lodygin watches on from the bench, he's been dropped for tonight's game, despite having a solid season.
  • 55'
    Yellow Card Sebastian Kehl
  • 55'
Kehl is on hand to help his teammates out once again, this time cynically dragging down Hulk as the Zenit winger looked to drive forward. Malafeev hasn't had a great deal to do since the restart, Semak's men are looking fairly resurgent, with a Russian goal potentially in the offing.
  • 53'
Zenit continue to remain positive, as Shatov drives forward in possession once again. He feeds Hulk possession inside the penalty box, but Sokratis is able to hack the ball clear. The away side are growing in confidence, and Dortmund are under the cosh currently.
  • 51'
HULK! Zenit win a free-kick 30 yards from goal, and doesn't need any invitation to try his luck. The Brazilian absolutely hammers his effort, which avoids the wall, but is constantly rising. Weidenfeller wasn't entirely sure about leaving it, however, given the unpredictable way the ball dipped earlier in the match.
  • 50'
Half chance for Zenit! A good cut-back from the byeline zips across the six yard line in the Dortmund penalty area, but Piszczek is just about able to do enough to clear his lines. The Russian outfit are looking confident despite their situation, and Villas-Boas will be pleased with what he's seen from his new side this evening.
  • 49'
Dortmund are happy to hold onto possession in the early minutes of the half, with the rhythmic backing of the fans behind Malafeev's goal. If we look to the bench, Klopp has a couple of options to make things interesting, with youngster Hofmann and January signing Jojic.
  • 47'
One change at the break, with Neto replacing Lombaerts, as Zenit's usual captain takes his leave possibly due to receiving a booking in the first half. Given Zenit's good defensive line and willingness to stick out a leg on the edge of the 18-yard box, leaving the Belgian on would have been risky.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionNicolas Lombaerts Neto
  • 46'
We're back underway in the second half, with both sides determined to find the next goal in this game! Zenit need three goals to go through outright, given Dortmund's four away goals at the Petrovski stadium, but nothing can be ruled out yet. The hosts look shaky at the back, and there are goals to be scored for Zenit here tonight.
  • Be sure to rejoin us in ten minutes time for all of the action in the second half, as Dortmund look to try and confirm their place in the next round of the competition with an early goal. Hulk's brilliance has shown that the away side can create something out of nothing, so a two goal cushion is required for Klopp's men as soon as possible.
  • A quite even match-up, with the trio of Hulk, Danny and Shatov causing plenty of problems for Dortmund. Lewandowski has picked up a yellow card, meaning that the hosts' star striker will miss Die Schwarzgelben's next Champions League clash, but what matters most to Klopp is closing out the second half first.
  • HALF TIME! Dortmund have things under control, despite being unable to prevent Hulk from smashing Zenit into an early lead. The Brazilian's thunderbolt gave the visitors some temporary hope, before captain Kehl stepped up to head an equaliser beyond the rusty Malafeev. It's 1-1 at the break at Signal Iduna Park.
  • 45' + 1'
There is only one minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half.
  • 45'
Important pieces of defending from Hummels! The Dortmund central defender puts in a key header, before clearing the loose ball away from Kerzhakov. Zenit lift the ball into the penalty area once again, but Weidenfeller claims ahead of Shatov.
  • 43'
The Bayern-bound striker looks to be in some discomfort, as Malafeev has scythed through Lewandowski's leg, but looks as though he'll try to continue. It was a needless lunge from the keeper, given the presence of other Zenit defenders, and Klopp will be counting his blessings that he didn't have another key player on the injury table.
  • 41'
Schmelzer is penalised for pushing over Anyukov as the German left-back burst into the penalty box, earning the referee some whistles from the home fans. Dortmund are back on the front foot, and now Malafeev clatters into Lewandowski. The goalkeeper comes a long, long way, getting the ball but catching plenty of the opposition striker too.
  • 39'
From his 30 Champions League appearances, what a great time for Kehl to score his first goal in the competition! Zenit looked to be threatening to score their second of the night, but the complexion of the match has completely transformed now, with Die Schwarzgelben looking to sew up the result before the half time break.
  • 38'
    Assist Marcel Schmelzer
  • 38'
    Goal Sebastian Kehl
GOOOOOAL! IT'S THE CAPTAIN KEHL! He fired Dortmund to a win a couple of weeks ago, and the defensive midfielder has stepped up when it matters again! Schmelzer whips in a wonderful cross, which Kehl meets firmly, and Malafeev can only palm the ball into the top corner! It looked to go through the Zenit keeper, he might be disappointed with that.
  • 37'
SHATOV! CLOSE FOR ZENIT! The tricky attacking midfielder manages to free himself from Piszczek, before looking to slide a low drive across the face and goal and inside the far post. Dortmund are really struggling to deal with Hulk and Shatov, with Aubameyang not doing enough to help cover the Polish right-back.
  • 35'
Zenit are defending well at the moment, marshalling their penalty area well, with Hubocan currently justifying his selection. Mkhitaryan has managed to break free a couple of times, but Lewandowski is being kept under firm tabs by the visiting defence.
  • 34'
SAHIN! Dortmund's holding midfielder tries his luck from a 25-yard free-kick, but sees his attempt strike the wall. It was on course for Malafeev's top left hand corner, but the Zenit defenders did their job efficiently. Dortmund continue to be frustrated, with half time approaching.
  • 32'
SHATOV! What a tame effort! Witsel does excellent to pick out his teammate on the corner of the 18-yard box despite being under heavy pressure, and Shatov cuts inside onto his right foot, getting a yard of space from his marker. Instead of thumping the ball into the bottom corner, he toepokes an awful effort towards goal, which Hummels hacks clear.
  • 30'
Half an hour in, and Dortmund's fans remain wholeheartedly behind their beloved Die Schwarzgelben, despite Zenit enjoying their opening 30 minutes. Hulk's blockbuster of a strike is still the difference between the two outfits, but a home goal from Dortmund would settle everything down. The scorer of the next goal in this game is incredibly important.
  • 28'
Smart move from Danny once again! The Portuguese receives the ball deep, before using a change of pace and a quick shimmy to get beyond his man. He tries to stab the ball in behind Dortmund for Kerzhakov to chase, but again the weight of pass is all wrong.
  • 27'
Good move from Zenit! Danny flicks the ball wide to Shatov, after receiving a short pass from Witsel, but the Russia international can't stab the ball in between Sokratis to find Kerzhakov lurking in the penalty area. Zenit's talismanic striker just hasn't been involved thus far.
  • 25'
Good hand from Malafeev! Sokratis is absolutely unmarked at the back post, and looks to be able to nod home Sahin's corner delivery unchallenged, but the returning Zenit goalkeeper gets a strong palm to the cross. Dortmund can't quite find that cutting edge.
  • 24'
Lombaerts picks up a card for shouldercharging Aubameyang to the ground, with the Belgian's shoulder catching the Dortmund forward in the throat. From the resulting dead ball situation, the free-kick delivery bounces out for a goal kick after avoiding everybody in the penalty box. The home side definitely aren't out of this game, they've looked good when breaking.
  • 23'
    Yellow Card Nicolas Lombaerts
  • 22'
GROSSKREUTZ! The Dortmund utility man unleashes a powerful effort from just outside the penalty box, and Malafeev beats the ball over the crossbar safely. The corner is whipped in, with Sokratis meeting the delivery, but the Greek defender can't keep his effort below Zenit's crossbar.
  • 21'
Danny drifts in between the lines, before the Portuguese midfielder tries to lift a ball through to the overlapping Shatov. The Russian gets in behind Dortmund, but the pass is too heavy, allowing for Weidenfeller to rush out and claim. Zenit are having the better of the game currently.
  • 20'
Well, the opening 20 minutes has been utterly lit up by a fantastic finish from Hulk. The movement of modern balls is often spoken about, and that effort from the Brazilian gave Weidenfeller absolutely no chance. Dipping and swerving, the Germany international goalkeeper was utterly helpless.
  • 18'
    Yellow Card Robert Lewandowski
  • 18'
Dortmund want a penalty, but the referee instead books Lewandowski for handball! The official brandishes the yellow card towards the Polish international, and as a result he'll miss the next round of the Champions League if Dortmund go through! He was shoved into the path of the ball, and that's a harsh decision.
  • 17'
Good ball from Shatov! The Russian attacking midfielder drifts inside, before clipping a ball towards the back post, but Witsel is unable to get on the end of it, claiming that he was pushed. The referee isn't interested, and Zenit look very confident here!
  • 16'
    Goal Hulk
WHAT A GOOOOOOOOOOAL! HULK SCORES FOR ZENIT, AND IT'S 1-0! He hurtles infield, before absolutely smashing a long-range effort into the top corner! The ball moves maniacally in the air, swerving due to the sheer power, and that is a scandalously fantastic goal!
  • 15'
A quarter of an hour played, and both goalkeepers have only had to make routine saves, as this game settles down. Aubameyang is penalised for challenging for an aerial ball with his arm raised, much to the annoyance of the home faithful. An even clash, thus far.
  • 14'
Zenit's captain Anyukov receives some medical attention, as the right-back appears to have some kind of muscle complaint. He's gone down onto his haunches a couple of times, but the Russia international appears determined to carry on despite his discomfort.
  • 12'
LEWANDOWSKI! Smart move from Dortmund, as the Polish striker is fed by a clever stabbed ball inside from Mkhitaryan with his back to goal. On the turn, Lewandowski tries to generate some power, but can only fire a tame effort within the grasp of Malafeev.
  • 10'
Good defensive header away by Hubocan! Sahin whips in a back post corner delivery, but Neto's replacement uses his height to his advantage, nodding the cross away from danger. Dortmund have tested Zenit in these opening stages, but Malafeev is yet to make a save.
  • 8'
Half chance for Zenit! Hummels balloons an intended clearance high into the air, with the covering Schmelzer unable to head the miscue away. Weidenfeller is on hand to rise up and claim the terrible clearance after it bounces dangerously inside Dortmund's penalty area.
  • 7'
WITSEL! It's a good hit from the Belgian midfielder! Picking up a loose ball 25 yards out from goal, Witsel needs no invitation to try his luck, but Weidenfeller sprawls down to his left hand side to palm the strike away.
  • 6'
What a let-off that was for Zenit! Their good start was nearly undone in one swift break, and that's what Dortmund can do to you. Aubameyang used his pace to sprint to the near post, but just couldn't find goalscoring contact. Klopp still can't believe that Die Schwarzgelben aren't ahead.
  • 5'
AUBAMEYANG! In the first leg, Zenit were two goals behind at this point of the game, so Semak will be pleased with the way that his visiting side have started. Dortmund break down the left, however, with Schmelzer whipping in a near post delivery for the Gabon international, but the former St Etienne man can only nod the ball wide of the post from six yards out!
  • 3'
As a sidenote, should Robert Lewandowski pick up a yellow card tonight, it would see the Poland international banned for the next round of the competition, something nobody connected to Dortmund wants to see, given the current injury crisis. Should tonight's hosts progress, the likes of Reus and Bender might be able to contribute to Klopp's Champions League campaign at some point.
  • 2'
The atmosphere is intimidating, but Zenit try to start the game with some positive possession. Dortmund are happy to sit in shape and try and break, and you can see why. The pace of Aubameyang down the right, with Mkhitaryan able to glide across the turf at great pace while in possession, leaves Dortmund with the ability to break quickly.
  • 1'
We are underway in the first half! The thousands of vibrantly clad supporters in the so-called Yellow Wall of Dortmund are making quite a racket in the opening stages. They know that their side are in the driving seat, but their support will be vital in driving Die Schwarzgelben into the next round of the Champions League. With the likes of Danny and Hulk in the starting line-up, however, Zenit could just create something out of nothing.
  • We are ten minutes from kick-off, so be sure to stick with us for all of the action, as Zenit look to keep their Champions League hopes alive with a vintage away performance tonight. They were defensively hopeless in the first leg, but with a few tweaks and a change of coach, Klopp's side could be facing an entirely different machine tonight. An enthralling clash awaits!
  • Of the 12 times that Dortmund have won their first leg away from home in UEFA competition, the German side have gone on to progress in the second leg 11 times. Good omen for the home side, while Zenit look to have a stern test ahead of them tonight. Given that the Russian outfit crawled through the group stage, getting this far can be considered as riding their luck somewhat - but as Dortmund lost at home last weekend, there's certainly some mileage left in their chances.
  • Zenit substitutes: Lodygin, Neto, Zyryanov, Smolnikov, Lukovic, Rondon, Tymoschchuk.
  • Zenit starting line-up: Malafeev; Anyukov, Hubocan, Lombaerts, Criscito; Witsel, Faizulin; Hulk, Shatov, Danny; Kerzhakov.
  • Dortmund substitutes: Langerak, Friedrich, Hofmann, Jojic, Kirch, Schieber, Durm.
  • Dortmund starting line-up: Weidenfeller; Piszczek, Sokratis, Hummels, Schmelzer; Sahin, Kehl; Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Grosskreutz; Lewandowski.
  • TEAM NEWS: Vyacheslav Malafeev is preferred in goal for the visitors, with Tomas Hubocan coming into the centre of defence in place of Neto. Aleksandr Kerzhakov is given a start leading the line in place of Salomon Rondon, with Portuguese midfielder Danny starting on the left hand side. Andrey Arshavin is sidelined, with Zenit's line-up otherwise being as predicted.
  • TEAM NEWS: Henrikh Mkhitaryan is back into the starting line-up following injury for the host, with Klopp otherwise opting for the same side which lost 2-1 to Borussia Monchengladbach last weeked. Marcel Schmelzer and Kevin Grosskreutz are again both deployed on the left hand side, charged with the task of doubling up on the physical presence of Hulk. Despite having a bad outing versus Gladbach, Lukasz Piszczek retains his place, while the likes of Gundogan, Bender, Subotic, Reus and Blaszczykowski remain sidelined through injury.
  • Previous manager Luciano Spalletti was dismissed from Zenit's helm despite keeping his side in contention for the league title, though today's visitors only just managed to squeeze through the Champions League group stages. Sergei Semak is the interim boss until Villas-Boas is officially installed, but the players will view tonight as their debut in front of the watchful and analytic eyes of their new Portuguese coach.
  • I'm Simon Harrison, and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action in Dortmund, as Zenit arrive with Andre Villas-Boas soon to be at the helm of the Russian Premier League club. The away side's record in Germany is rather even, winning two, drawing two and losing two, with the latter two scenarios being enough to see Klopp's men progress. As this is the first time in 16 years that Dortmund have qualified for this stage of the Champions League consecutively, the hosts will be hoping that fate is on their side - given that the last time this occurred, Dortmund lifted the trophy.
  • Hello and welcome to live coverage of Zenit's Champions League visit to Signal Iduna Park to face Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund, with the home side holding a 4-2 aggregate advantage from the first leg. With four away goals in their favour, it would take a serious upset for Die Schwarzgelben to not progress into the next round, but an amalgamation of injuries and the Russian side having a new manager to impress could lead to the St. Petersburg-based outfit having some success in Germany.
