Live Commentary

  • That marks the end of our live-text coverage tonight. I've been Tim Poole and you've been a superb audience. We hope you enjoyed our coverage - and we look forward to seeing you next time. Take care!
  • Who impressed Mourinho the most tonight? We will have to wait until the weekend to find out the result of that one - but one man who certainly did his chances of selection no harm was Torres. Whether the Spaniard can deliver against bigger sides is another matter, however, while question marks will still be raised over Juan Mata, David Luiz and Willian.
  • For Swindon, though, boss Mark Cooper will be able to hold his head high with pride after an admirable performance in which goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and young midfielder Alex Pritchard shone in particular. It is back to League One for them now and that means a trip to Preston North End on Saturday.
  • Goals from Fernando Torres and then Ramires sealed a comfortable victory for Jose Mourinho and his charges and attention will now turn to the Blues' Premier League clash at Tottenham this weekend.
  • FULL-TIME! The referee blows his final whistle at the County Ground and Chelsea have run out 2-0 winners here.
  • 90' + 2'
Added time is upon us now and we are moments away from confirmation of a routine win for Mourinho's men.
  • 90'
As we enter injury time, some Swindon fans are starting to make their way to the exits. News is also filtering through of results from other ties, including a 5-0 win for Manchester City against Wigan Athletic.
  • 89'
CHANCE! Torres makes a fantastic jinking run into the opposing danger area but Willian is on hand once again... to ruin the attack. His shot hits straight into a defender and goes out for a corner.
  • 88'
Alex Pritchard is named the home sponsor's man of the match! A fine night for the 20-year-old, who is on loan at Swindon from Tottenham Hotspur. Could he have a promising future ahead of him?
  • 87'
Take nothing away from the hosts' performance, however. As I've repeatedly said, they have produced a fine display against towering opposition this evening.
  • 86'
Ba now fires just wide! This is a stroll in the park for the visitors late on and boss Mourinho will no doubt be delighted to have avoided a potential banana skin in Swindon tonight.
  • 84'
Nathan Thompson kicks out at Essien! But, with the defender already booked, the referee does not give him his marching orders, especially as there was doubt as to whether there was intent.
  • 82'
Now Willian has committed a needless foul; it is not the best night of his career, although he most probably is not used to playing in Swindon, in his defence.
  • 80'
SELFISH! Willian fires desperately wide after refusing the option of teeing up Torres instead. It seems the Brazilian's eagerness to impress Mourinho may be counting against him here tonight.
  • 78'
    SubstitutionKevin De Bruyne Demba Ba
Ba has come on for De Bruyne and his first involvement sees Mata eventually set up for a shot, though the Spaniard fires it straight into the crowd. Luckily, however, the ball is greeted by away fans - not the opposition supporters.
  • 77'
    Yellow Card Nathan Thompson
  • 76'
SAVE! Foderingham saves a Luiz free kick and manages to keep hold of the ball. You might think that no mean feat considering the Brazilian's immense power behind the ball.
  • 75'
At the moment, the latter seems the more plausible option, although Demba Ba's imminent introduction may change that.
  • 74'
Will we see any more goals tonight or will both sides be content with the current 2-0 scoreline?
  • 73'
Swindon make a change that means they now have an Egyptian as well as an Iraqi international among their ranks. Very international for a League One side.
  • 72'
    SubstitutionNicky Ajose Mohamed El Gabbas
  • 71'
Cahill now commits a foul and we have a break in play - or rather Chelsea possession - as Swindon get a free kick.
  • 69'
OVER AND OUT! Willian sends an effort miserably high and wide after some extended pressure from the visitors. Torres is involved once again yet it is the Brazilian who ends up primed to tuck away Chelsea's third - but he fluffs his lines.
  • 67'
Swindon may regret not capitalising on their earlier spell of superiority but they are still advancing into the Chelsea danger area when they can. This time, McEveley runs forward but his cross is easily collected by Schwarzer.
  • 65'
The Blues win a corner now, though it is only their first of the game. A third goal would surely put this encounter to bed - and such an outcome is becoming more and more likely as Chelsea retrieve the dominant aura from the home side.
  • 63'
CHANCE! De Bruyne is at the ready once more but Foderingham is on hand to save yet again.
  • 61'
The hosts are enjoying a really encouraging spell here. But can they beat Schwarzer, who has excelled on his debut?
  • 59'
CHANCE! Danny N'Guessan's header forces a save from Schwarzer! The offside flag is raised once again a moment later, though. Frustration for Swindon!
  • 58'
It is a poor delivery from James McEvely, however, and it comes to nothing.
  • 57'
CORNER! Swindon win a corner after more superb work from Pritchard, though they were gifted possession by Cahill, who lost the ball in a very similar fashion to how Luiz did in the first half.
  • 56'
Whether the Blues' current performers have done enough to secure a place in the starting XI against Tottenham this weekend is another matter, though.
  • 55'
Play has more or less resumed its former state now, with Chelsea easily retaining possession and exchanging passes as though they were on the training ground.
  • 54'
    Yellow Card Michael Essien
YELLOW CARD! Essien is booked after a foul on Kasim.
  • 51'
DISALLOWED GOAL! A great delivery sees Swindon score! But the header is chalked off for offside.
  • 50'
Nathan Thompson is now involved for the hosts and they win a free kick inside the Chelsea half.
  • 49'
CHANCE! Luiz plays in De Bruyne but the Belgian rushes his shot and fails to convert.
  • 48'
Luiz is now plying his trade in midfield in this second half, as he once did under Rafael Benitez at Stamford Bridge last season.
  • 47'
The word is that the Brazilian has picked up a knock and, if so, that will be two injuries in one night for Chelsea.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionNile Ranger Louis Thompson
  • 46'
    SubstitutionRamires John Terry
  • 46'
We are off in this Capital One Cup second half! There have been two changes at half-time as Louis Thompson comes on for Nile Ranger for the home side. More puzzingly, John Terry has come on for first-half substitute Ramires for the visitors.
  • Things are, perhaps, more finely poised then they appear, then, so stay with us for coverage of the second half as the home side look to cause Chelsea some damage on the break - and maybe even grab themselves a goal (or more).
  • Swindon have by no means given a bad account of themselves, however, with the likes of Alex Pritchard and Yaser Kasim really taking the game to the away side when they could. Wes Foderingham, too, has impressed and can consider himself unlucky to have conceded twice.
  • So Chelsea lead 2-0 at the break and deservedly so. It says a lot for the gulf in quality between these two sides that the visitors are far superior even with a second-choice starting XI.
  • HALF-TIME! The referee rounds off a very satisfactory half for the away side.
  • 45' + 1'
How impressed will Mourinho be with his charges? Mata was involved for the first goal, while Torres (who scored that first goal) was instrumental for the second. Could the Chelsea boss be more impressed with the likes of Swindon's Kasim and Pritchard, however?
  • 45'
Another Swindon attack is intercepted and the half-time whistle is almost upon us. The home side look as though they could just make a game of it in the second half!
  • 44'
Pritchard delivers the set-piece but Schwarzer - who, one comically stray pass aside, has very much impressed tonight - punches the ball away with real authority.
  • 43'
    Yellow Card César Azpilicueta
  • 43'
Swindon have a chance from a free kick, however...
  • 42'
Azpilicueta goes down to win a free kick for the away side as they look to close out a half in which they have done their job as consummate professionals. 2-0 they lead.
  • 40'
Pritchard now runs at the Chelsea defence and forces a save from Schwarzer! The home side are attacking at will here and it is good to see them make the most of the occasion.
  • 38'
CHANCE! There may just be! Kasim makes a fantastic run and fires at Schwarzer, who palms the ball out for a corner. Great strike from the Iraq international.
  • 37'
Is there any way back for the home side?
  • 35'
    Goal Ramires
GOAL! Ramires! Is that game over? Torres is involved once more to set up the Brazilian and Ramires finishes with his right foot from a tight angle. A quickfire double from the Blues.
  • 32'
What a blow that will be for the League One side's confidence. They had performed admirably up to that point - and Foderingham was not easily beaten, even then.
  • 29'
    Goal Fernando Torres
GOAL! Torres! It seems I spoke too soon. The striker's Spain team-mate Mata has his initial shot parried by another great save from Foderingham - but Torres is there on the rebound. The earlier chance was merely a warning sign.
  • 28'
Foderingham looks every bit the part tonight and the young goalkeeper has got Premier League experience with Fulham under his belt. Can he keep Chelsea out all night? He is doing a stellar job so far.
  • 27'
SAVE! Foderingham saves superbly after Torres finds himself one-on-one with the Swindon goalkeeper. After the Spaniard was played in, he had space at his mercy but Foderingham rushed off his line and ended up almost saving the shot with his face!
  • 26'
As if through some strange coincidence, Luiz then loses the ball carelessly in his own half.
  • 25'
Chelsea enjoy a reasonable opening but Mata, of all people, sends a hopeless cross off for a throw-in. Surely that is not how the Spaniard is aiming to impress Mourinho...
  • 24'
'Swindon, Swindon, Swindon', chant the home fans - simply but effectively.
  • 23'
Affairs are much more even now, with Swindon enjoying plenty of possession in the last few minutes. Did Van Ginkel's injury perhaps disrupt Mourinho's tactical plan?
  • 22'
Kasim is fortunate not to receive a booking and his side do not suffer any lasting damage from the resultant free kick, either. Indeed, Mata's delivery is headed straight into Foderingham's path by Cahill.
  • 21'
Pritchard is involved once again - down the left-hand side this time, though the ball is given away and Essien, surging forward on the break, is caught by Yaser Kasim.
  • 20'
The home side have almost suffered an injury worry of their own, with the divisive Nile Ranger going down clutching his thigh. The former Newcastle man has returned to action, however, and seems fit enough to continue.
  • 18'
Alex Pritchard orchestrates an attack for the hosts that eventually peters out - but not before a significant defensive effort from the visitors. Incidentally, Swindon also have a 15-year-old on the bench: Ryan Wood.
  • 16'
So far, it is goalless here at Swindon but two sides in the lead in other cup matches at the moment are West Ham and Southampton, who have built up early leads in their respective clashes.
  • 14'
COMICAL! Mark Schwarzer misplaces a pass to Gary Cahill and the ball sails off for a throw-in. Not the kind of moment the Australian will want to be remembered for in a Chelsea shirt.
  • 13'
Swindon retreive the ball from Torres and exchange several passes within their own half, much to the encouragement of the home fans.
  • 11'
SAVE! Luiz thumps a swerving free kick from distance that prompts a messy save from Wes Foderingham. No one is there to follow up on the rebound, however, even though the ball seemed to be begging to be hit.
  • 10'
    SubstitutionMarco van Ginkel Ramires
OFF! Well, after resuming with the action, Van Ginkel has gone down once again and will now be replaced by Ramires, a player Mourinho would no doubt have preferred to have rested. A shame for the Dutchman as his night peters out in an unwanted fashion.
  • 9'
Van Ginkel returns to his feet after being helped to the touchline and the game resumes.
  • 8'
Van Ginkel is now down after a collision, however, and the game suffers its first stoppage as the Dutchman stays down.
  • 7'
And the home players are certainly not shying away from the occasion, either, as they advance up the pitch after robbing Marco van Ginkel of the ball, only for an Essien tackle to end the attack.
  • 5'
The Swindon fans are in great voice on what is undoubtedly a huge occasion for their side.
  • 4'
Willian, who is starting out wide, now sees the ball, though Essien then loses possession with a careless pass. Still all Chelsea so far, however.
  • 3'
Luiz then exchanges passes with Essien, who is Chelsea's captain for the night. But it is Azpilicueta who moves the attack forward as he surges down the right-hand side, although his cross is no to avail.
  • 2'
Chelsea lose possession after Kevin De Bruyne is dispossessed but then regain it via a free kick as David Luiz is fouled.
  • 1'
    We're off at Swindon Town!
  • All eyes will no doubt be on the performance of Mata tonight but can the Robins stop the Spaniard in his tracks, causing a big upset in the process? Stay tuned to find out - kick-off is less than 15 minutes away!
  • And the visitors will look like this: Schwarzer; Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Bertrand; Essien (C), Van Ginkel; De Bruyne, Mata, Willian; Torres. Subs: Blackman, Terry, Ramires, Baker, Schurrle, Ba, Eto'o.
  • The home side will line up like this against Chelsea tonight: Foderingham; N Thompson, Hall, Ward (C), McEveley; Kasim, Luongo, Pritchard, Ajose; Ranger, N'Guessan. Subs: Belford, Elgabas, L Thompson, Storey, Barthram, Branco, Wood.
  • But while tonight presents somewhat of a bonus option for the Europa League champions, it will no doubt be treated as the big occasion it is for hosts Swindon. It was not so long ago that the Robins were pushing for back-to-back promotions under Paolo Di Canio. Both parties have somewhat stagnated since, however.
  • Indeed, the likes of David Luiz and Juan Mata - so controversially left out against Fulham at the weekend - Willian, Cesar Azpilicueta, Fernando Torres and Michael Essien have all been given a rare outing for Chelsea. And with Mourinho admitting he is unsure of his best starting XI, each of the above names will surely look to pounce at the opportunity to impress their new manager.
  • We have an interesting clash in prospect for you tonight - and one Blues boss Jose Mourinho will surely welcome, given the run of tough fixtures he has endured of late. The cup tie presents the Portuguese with a good chance to experiment with alternative options and he has duly heeded the opportunity.
  • Good evening and welcome to live play-by-play commentary of Swindon versus Chelsea in the Capital One Cup third round. I'm your host, Tim Poole, and I'll be guiding you through the action tonight - so sit back, get comfortable and enjoy the show.
