Canada 0-1 Mauritania: 10-man Canucks fall despite good performance

Canada's scoring woes continued as it fell in the second of two matches against the African side. Marcel de Jong was sent off in the first half.

OLIVA, Spain – All the talk from the players and staff in the first camp with Benito Floro as Canada's head coach was about performance rather than results.

Tuesday was a case where the performance wasn’t too bad at all, but the result wasn’t there as the Canadians dropped a 1-0 loss to 151st-ranked Mauritania.

With the team learning a new style of play, Canada controlled most of the game and spent massive amounts of time in the opposing end, but it couldn’t find a goal.

If you’re a fan of Canadian men’s soccer, it’s a familiar story.

“The way we’ve played in both games, it’s a different style of football and it’s a different understanding as well,” said midfielder Julian de Guzman, who wore the captain’s armband before handing it off to Terry Dunfield when he was taken off in the 66th minute. “I think the guys feel really good about that and it’s pretty obvious what needs to be done and that’s scoring.”

Canada had all the chances early, and was notably foiled in the 33rd minute. After Adam Straith knocked a high free kick to the right side for Tosaint Ricketts, he crossed to Nakajima-Farran, whose shot was blocked on the goal line by a Mauritanian defender.

“You need to finish the moves. It’s important,” Floro said. “I say the players made several chances on goal but it’s a question of finishing them in the next camp.”

Rebuilding process aside, the team still has just one goal in 10 games in 2013. That spot on the attacking line is wide open for anyone wanting to take over the mantle of Canadian goal scorer.

Canada's Marcel de Jong was off for two yellow cards in the first half. Mauritania's Oumar N’Diaye, who got his second yellow in the 63rd minute for a foul on Nakajima-Farran, would later join de Jong, but in between those two moments was the difference in the game.

Bastia's Adama Ba controlled a ball over the top of the defense. Alone in space, Ba was one-on-one with Milan Borjan and slotted the ball home.

“We weren’t concentrating as high as we could have but I feel like after they scored we did dominate the game,” said Straith, who put in a good performance. “At the end of the game it’s not going to be good enough to just dominate and not score and not get a result at some point.”
