Player Ratings: Wigan Athletic 1-1 Rubin Kazan

Nick Powell continued the Latics' unbeaten run in the Europa League as the Championship outfit fought back impressively from Aleksandr Prudnikov's coolly-dispatched opener

    Scott Carson

Was a spectator for the majority of the game. Stood no chance whatsoever with the opener as Prudnikov arrowed a strike beyond him into the far corner.

  • Stephen Crainey

    Stephen Crainey

Tried to support Beausejour as often as possible but was equally responsible in performing his defensive duties. Always looked steady and capable when on the ball too.

  • Ryan Shotton

    Ryan Shotton

Does not look like a central defender but went about his task with the minimum of fuss. Grew more composed as the game wore on.

  • Emmerson Boyce

    2.00

    Emmerson Boyce

Could not handle the pace down the flanks from Rubin and was extremely sloppy in possession. Not the finest display from the skipper with all of the visitors' good work coming down his side.

  • Leon Barnett

    2.50

    Leon Barnett

Struggled with the constant movement of the lively Prudnikov but stepped up in the second half to help his side produce a more assured defensive display.

  • Chris McCann

    0
    2.00

    Chris McCann

Looked woefully out of his depth in the center of the park. Failed to string any meaningful passes together and did not provide enough defensive cover either.

  • Ben Watson
    0
    0
    3.00

    Ben Watson

Was tigerish in his midfield work, snapping away at the heels of Rubin's attacking triumvirate with intent. Set up an opening for his side through his combative style, although it ultimately came to nothing.

  • Jordi Gómez
    0
    0
    2.50

    Jordi Gómez

Usually such a cool customer in possession but was nowhere near his normal standards as he failed to get the better of a dominant Rubin midfield.

  • Nick Powell

    3.00

    Nick Powell

Was poor until he grabbed the equalizer, which sprung him back into life. Looked reinvigorated thereafter and was much more of a threat in attacking areas around first Holt and then Fortune.

  • Jean Beausejour
    0
    0
    2.50

    Jean Beausejour

Try as he might, the Chilean simply could not get the better of his marker Kuzmin at right back. Tracked back well to help Crainey but seemed frustrated throughout, evident in his lack of a final ball. Was eventually replaced.

  • Grant Holt
    0
    0
    2.50

    Grant Holt

Battled hard up front as the Latics. Starved of possession at times, failed to offer any meaningful service to the isolated frontman but his dominance over Sharonov in the air proved he was up for the fight. Was hauled off in the second half.

Substitutions

  • James McClean

    3.00

    James McClean

Injected some pace down the left but found Kuzmin in as resilient form as Beausejour had. Helped Crainey defensively though, which showed maturity and selflessness.

  • Callum McManaman
    0
    0
    3.00

    Callum McManaman

Had contributed very little during his short spell on the pitch but almost forced home an opening at the far post late on before setting up Fortune for what looked like a certain goal but for a heroic save.

  • Marc-Antoine Fortune
    0
    0
    3.00

    Marc-Antoine Fortune

Provided the brute strength of Holt but also showed some awareness of those around him when he had the ball. Missed two great chances to bury the winning goal, with Ryzhikov foiling him brilliantly at the death.

  • Sergey Ryzhikov
    0
    0
    3.00

    Sergey Ryzhikov

Was sometimes slightly erratic in his punching and when coming for the ball but made some clever saves. Could do nothing about Powell's powerful equalizer. Made a stunning stop to deny Fortune late on.

  • Oleg Kuzmin
    0
    0
    3.00

    Oleg Kuzmin

Did very well to contend with the double threat of Beausejour and Crainey down the left. Did not give the Chilean the freedom he longed for on the counter.

  • Chris Mavinga
    0
    0
    3.00

    Chris Mavinga

Looked to get forward at every opportunity and his side benefited from his left-wing ventures with the opening goal after his sublime cross. Did not neglect his defensive duties either. Looked like he had a point to prove on these shores after a time to forget at Liverpool.

  • Marcano
    0
    0
    3.00

    Marcano

The more settled of the two central defenders. Struggled at times with the frenetic pace of some of the host's attacks but generally dealt well with what was thrown at him.

  • Roman Sharonov
    0
    0
    2.50

    Roman Sharonov

Looked nervous whenever Holt came near him. Struggled in the aerial battle and was fortunate his side did not concede after Watson had robbed him of the ball in the first half.

  • Alexander Ryazantsev
    0
    0
    2.50

    Alexander Ryazantsev

Knitted the play together in the hole between midfield and attack. Showed a vast range of passing but did not always offer enough support to Prudnikov up top.

  • Dmitriy Torbinskiy

    3.00

    Dmitriy Torbinskiy

So silky on the ball and glided across the DW turf with the ball at times. Rarely gave the ball away in a tremendously composed and elegant performance.

  • Sergei Kislyak
    0
    0
    2.50

    Sergei Kislyak

Sat alongside M'Vila, and while not as dominant, the diminutive midfield man was constantly cajoling his teammates back into their respective positions and helping to stifle Wigan's offensive play.

  • Roman Eremenko
    1
    0
    3.00

    Roman Eremenko

Drifted from wing to wing to confuse and unsettle the Wigan backline in equal measure. Was effective with the ball but showed a willingness to track back too.

  • Yann M'Vila

    0
    3.50

Yann M'Vila Top of the Match

The Frenchman, who seemed to flirt with the idea of a move to England each transfer window, impressed in the holding role. Broke up play well and was quick to get his side on the move.

  • Alexander Prudnikov
    0
    0
    3.00

    Alexander Prudnikov

Took the opening goal of the evening clinically, firing across Carson and generally lead the line well for his side. Held the ball up but also showed clever movement between the central defenders.

Substitutions

  • César Navas
    0
    0
    2.50

    César Navas

Made very little impact as the visitors sought some creative impetus in the final third. Showed some neat touches but was on the fringes of the game.

  • Wakaso

    0
    1.50

    Wakaso Flop of the Match

An absolutely shambolic cameo. One of his first touches was a needless flick which sold his full back short and rolled out for a throw-in. The Ghanaian was also cautioned for a reckless challenge. His two main acts just about summed up his time on the pitch.

  • Gökdeniz Karadeniz
    0
    0
    2.50

    Gökdeniz Karadeniz

Only came on for 15 minutes but looked bright and imaginative as he looked to get at the tiring Wigan backline at every opportunity.
