Had to make a couple of stops but never anything too serious as the majority of Schalke's players spent their time in the Basel half. Kept out Salah and Streller when called upon though.
A big aid for Farfan on the right as he regularly released the Peruvian with through-balls or went beyond him in support. Was allowed to act as a second right winger for the hosts as attacks for the visitors almost dried up completely.
Couldn't believe his luck when he found himself in behind the defense without a single Basel player in sight. Still maintained his composure well to finish though, despite replays showing he was offside. Picked up a soft booking too for a foul on Streller.
Sent off at the weekend for two bookable offenses, the skipper could easily have suffered the same fate against Yakin's side. Took a chance by rugby tacking Streller to the ground and perhaps it was just as well he had to go off with injury.
Has been party to his fair share of Champions League drama after making it to the final with Dortmund last season and showed his experience here. Was perhaps lucky not to be penalized for a foul on Salah but dealt with just about everything Basel had to offer, even if that was very little.
Took a booking for his side by bringing down Salah when the visitors threatened to break. Didn't have too much else to deal with defensively and took the opportunity to join Draxler on the left when possible.
Took a nasty challenge from Serey Die on the chin in the first half. Resisted the chance to get forward as Schalke laid siege to the Basel goal in the second period. Sat deeper and acted as a platform instead, something that also prevented any chance of a Basel counter.
Embarking on a mazy run inside the first minute, the Schalke starlet was clearly eager to make his mark on the game. Could have put his side in front but saw his scuffed effort cleared off the line by Ivanov. A very assured display for someone of his age on such a stage as this.
Desperately unlucky not to open the scoring when he connected with Farfan's cross. His quick reactions and speed played a large part in the sending off of Ivanov. Continued to pose a threat in the second half but took up more of a creative role, laying on chances for Farfan and Szalai.
Proved as elusive as ever down the left as he gave Voser a tough time, capitalizing on the booking picked up by the Basel left back by taking him on at every opportunity. Wonderfully composed finish to give his side the lead but his night ended on a sour note when a hamstring injury meant he had to be replaced.
Exhibited his frightening change of pace as he zipped down the right to set up Boateng, who could only hit the bar. Was in sensational form in the second half, laying on both goals with pinpoint deliveries and only the fantastic form of Sommer denied him from adding a goal to what would have been the perfect performance.
Was given no chance by Draxler's controlled finish and deserted by his teammates as Matip made the game safe for Schalke. Made easily a dozen top saves to keep the score respectable, getting the better of Farfan in their personal duel.
Helped his side out of a sticky situation early on when he cleared off the line from Meyer. Quickly turned from hero to zero though as he got himself sent off for pulling down Boateng when the striker got the wrong side of him.
The hosts had a field day on the flanks and Voser did very little to prevent Draxler from running riot. Picked up a booking for a poor challenge on Meyer in the first half and was constantly turned inside out by Schalke's number 10.
Left in the lurch by his defensive partner Ivanov and was given wave upon wave of Schalke attack to deal with as the hosts made the most of their numerical advantage. Took his frustration out on Szalai with a badly-timed challenge.
Lucky to be allowed to stay on the pitch after a nasty looking challenge on Neustadter. Was the player who fell asleep as Basel tried a training ground routine to bring the entire backline up, but in all fairness the Schalke players were offside.
Not a great performance on the wing from Stocker as any chance he has of causing trouble diminished with his side being reduced to 10 men. At the same time, failed to give Xhaka much protection from the unplayable Farfan.
The man in the middle had a job on his hands as his side lost a man. Aware that his side was in the process of a Schalke siege, he dropped deeper to give his defense some protection, but to no avail.
Found it tough in the middle once his side was reduced in numbers. Did well enough that Schalke had to play most of its football on the wings, blocking the middle, although you have to feel that only played into the opponent's hands.
Put in at left back and could not have faced a more formidable opponent as he found himself up against an in-form Farfan. Was run ragged by the Peruvian and couldn't keep up with him on just about every occasion.
Will maybe be asking questions as to why Howedes wasn't dismissed in the first period when he was rugby tackled to the ground by the Schalke captain. Was given several shooting opportunities but didn't really ever test Fahrmann and never bothered to help out his side defensively, despite the onslaught.
Had the moment when he threatened to open up the hosts on the counter. Could have been given a free kick in a dangerous area as Santana looked to catch him on the shin but didn't get any help from the referee.
