Everton 0-1 Valencia: Toffees come unstuck against dominant Liga side

Michel's second-half strike settled the affair in Miami and handed los Che a fifth-place finish in the preseason tournament at the expense of Roberto Martinez's side.

Valencia produced a dominant performance despite only managing a 1-0 win over Everton in the Guinness International Champions Cup on Tuesday.

A 52nd-minute goal from Michel was all that separated the teams at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, where Valencia sealed fifth place at the preseason tournament.

Valencia, which thrashed Inter 4-0 on Sunday, controlled most of what was, at times, a lackluster contest.

The Liga outfit dominated possession in the first half, while Everton looked most threatening on the counterattack.

Jonathan Viera was dangerous throughout and his tricky run led to a chance for Valencia in the ninth minute but the opportunity went begging.

Both teams lacked composure in the attacking third and the Premier League side could have been ahead if Ross Barkley had executed better with his pass on the break.

Robert Ibanez had a good chance for Valencia on 23 minutes but he was denied by Joel Robles in a one-on-one after a fine Andres Guardado through-ball.

Along with Viera, Valencia left-back and Liverpool target Aly Cissokho was impressive and had a 30th-minute shot from an angle go wide.

Robles was forced into a save two minutes later but Jonas' strike from just outside the area was too weak to threaten seriously.

Despite Valencia's dominance of possession, Everton had the best chance of the first half on 33 minutes.

Bryan Oviedo played a lovely pass through to Steven Naismith, whose well-placed shot was palmed away by Vicente Guaita.

Victor Anichebe had an opportunity to set up Naismith on the counter soon after but failed to pick him out before shooting over having been found by Marouane Fellaini.

Jonas had forced Robles into another save early in the second half before Valencia finally opened the scoring in the 52nd minute.

Cissokho's cross from the left found Michel just outside the area and the attacker brought down the pass with his chest before powering a controlled finish into the bottom corner.

Juan Bernat went close to doubling Valencia's advantage on 66 minutes but his shot took a deflection and rolled wide.

Everton threatened on the counterattack moments later but Kevin Mirallas failed to pick out either of the two men surging into the area.

Ibanez should have sealed the win for the Spaniards in the 70th minute but he was denied in a one-on-one as Robles stood up to keep the Toffees in the game.

Valencia camped itself in Everton's half late on, denying Roberto Martinez's men possession as it saw out a comfortable win.
