Live Commentary

  • And that's it! The USA gets an ugly win but it's the eighth straight victory for Jurgen Klinsmann - a USMNT record.
  • 90' + 2'
    Yellow Card Michael Parkhurst
  • 90'
Let's take a sec here to praise San Johnson. MAde a great save on the Costa Rica free kick that turned into the counter for Shea's goal, and has hardl;y done a thing wrong all night.
  • 82'
    Assist Landon Donovan
  • 82'
    Goal Brek Shea
  • 82'
GOAL USA! Brek Shea gets his first-ever senior international goal, getting on the end of Donovan's long leading pass on the counter. Pemberton got a piece, but not enough, and it's 1-0 to the Yanks.
  • 80'
    SubstitutionAlejandro Bedoya J. Corona
  • 78'
    SubstitutionJ. Arrieta A. Saborío
  • 78'
Not a bad introduction for Brek Shea. A bit disjointed, but the winger beats his man and gets a pass into a dangerous area.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionJ. Torres Brek Shea
  • 77'
    SubstitutionChris Wondolowski H. Gómez
  • 76'
    Yellow Card J. Arrieta
  • 72'
    SubstitutionRodney Wallace O. Rodríguez
  • 70'
This game is descending into a very traditional, war of attrition CONCACAF game. Very chippy and physical and strained, none of the fluid pass-and-move soccer Jurgen Klinsmann so desperately wants to instill in his team.
  • 69'
    SubstitutionR. Miller C. Meneses
  • 60'
    Yellow Card Stuart Holden
  • 57'
    Yellow Card K. Cunningham
  • 57'
And then a FANTASTIC save from Pemberton, climbing up to paw away Torres' free kick and then pouncing to smother the rebound. US fans may feel aggrieved he's even in the game at this point.
  • 55'
    Yellow Card P. Pemberton
  • 55'
Big decision for referee Courtney Campbell. Pemberton comes out to chase away the ball, and then when the rebound is shot, he saves it with his hands, outside the box. Although it could have easily been red, he only gets a yellow.
  • 54'
Over the bar from Wondo! Bedoya did well to make a move and get the pass inside, but Wondo skies it under little pressure inside the box.
  • 50'
This is a bit ridiculous. Patrick Pemberton, the Costa Rica keeper, went down under an innocuous bump from Wondolowski and has spent the better part of two minutes on the ground.
  • 46'
Looks like we're to begin the second half with no subs.
  • And that's the half done. Scoreless, with Costa Rica going in the much happier side.
  • 41'
This is the first real test the USA "B" team has had in this tournament, and it's not looking so great. Costa Rica's back five and physical midfield holding firm at the moment.
  • 33'
It's Costa Rica's turn to go close from the corner, and Junior Diaz's overhead kick is a much more compelling attempt than Bedoya's header was, but it goes over.
  • 29'
Alejandro Bedoya gets up and puts his head on Landon Donovan's corner, but he puts it wide. Should have done better from so close in.
  • 28'
There's a lot of choppy back-and-forth in midfield at the moment. You have the feeling someone is going to make a mistake soon.
  • 22'
Jose Torres gets away with one as his tackle from behind on a counterattacking Kenny Cunningham goes unpunished.
  • 20'
Michael Parkhurst puts a nice cross in from wide right, but Giancarlo Gonzalez does well to clear.
  • 14'
It is all happening down this near sideline. Beasley gets down to the endline to met a ball and make a cross, but Diaz gets just enough on it that it doesn't end up anywhere too dangerous.
  • 11'
Wallace is giving the U.S. some problems down the right flank. This time it's Jose Torres who does well to remove the danger after a deftly flicked pass from the forward.
  • 8'
An awkward trip and faceplant landing from Beasley allows Rodney Wallace to cut inside and put a shot wide. Beasley is slow to get up.
  • 2'
Some early penetration from the U.S. as Beasley uses his speed to overlap down the right and put a cross in. It's hit back out to the captain, and he darts inside to put a shot wide.
  • It is important to note that both of these teams have already qualified for the next stage, having won their first two games.
  • The last meeting between the Yanks and the Ticos was, of course, the "SnowClasico" back in March, when the U.S. took a 1-0 win on a wintry Colorado night.
  • And here's your Costa Rica lineup: Pemberton; Gonzalez, Umana, Johnson, Diaz; Miller, Borges, Tejeda, Wallace; Cunningham, Arrieta.
  • That's Chicago Fire keeper Sean Johnson starting for the Yanks. Up top, Chris Wondolowski is six goals short of the Gold Cup record. Assuming the USA makes the final, he'll have a total of four games to catch Luis Roberto Alves's record of 11. Given his recent form, it's not completely unthinkable.
  • Here's the USA lineup: Johnson; Parkhurst, Orozco, Goodson, Beasley; Holden, Diskerud; Bedoya, Donovan, Torres; Wondolowski.
  • Good evening! I'm Goal US editor Keith Hickey (@HickeyGOAL) and I'll be doing your LIVE commentary for USA - Costa Rica for this CONCACAF Gold Cup Group C meeting.
