Player Ratings: Cardiff City 1-0 Swansea City

After a turgid opening to the first Welsh derby at the Premier League level, former Swans man Steven Caulker headed the only goal to give the hosts bragging rights.

    David Marshall

Produced a lively performance under occasional pressure from the visitors. Was never fully tested but still looked fully prepared to keep his side in the game.

    Andrew Taylor

Despite not facing much of an attacking threat, the Cardiff man could hardly be questioned in terms of his defensive performance.

Steven Caulker Top of the Match

Captained his side with aplomb and gave it a vital lead with a perfect second-half header. Seemed to be in several places at once, surging forward at will, while also shielding his side at the back.

  • Ben Turner

    Ben Turner

Embodied the spirit of the occasion with some firm but fair challenges for his side and helped keep a toothless Swansea side at bay.

    Kevin Theophile Catherine

Lost the ball on occasion but produced good deliveries from time to time. Did not put a foot wrong, the odd misplaced pass aside.

  • Peter Whittingham

    2.50

    Peter Whittingham

Played the role of Cardiff’s set-piece taker and deliverer of regular crosses, though his definitive impact in terms of concrete chances was limited and he was replaced in his role for Bellamy for the defining corner.

  • Gary Medel

    3.50

    Gary Medel

Was heavily involved throughout but primarily in a defensive capacity. His firm tackling and authoritative presence made him the best player in the middle of the park.

  • Jordon Mutch

    Jordon Mutch

Played just off Odemwingie but failed to influence the game during his time on the field. Was taken off by Malky Mackay in the second half, with Gunnarsson his replacement.

    Don Cowie

Ventured forward several times in the second half, threatening the Swansea defense when in space.

  • Peter Odemwingie

    Peter Odemwingie

Relied upon as his side’s spearhead in attack, though the sum of his contributions was the occasional won corner and fruitless run onto the ball in the box. Could have done with more service.

  • Craig Bellamy

    3.50

    Craig Bellamy

Took over set-piece duty from Whittingham – setting up Caulker’s opener with a corner – and epitomized the derby with his usual fighting spirit. Could be accused of being too wound up, however, after spending the whole of the first half conducting arguments in some way or other.

    Aron Einar Gunnarsson

Replaced Mutch in the second half and offered slightly more than the man he replaced, although his impact was still rather insignificant.

  • Fraizer Campbell

    2.00

    Fraizer Campbell

Came on in the second half but was not really needed after Caulker’s opener, though fouled as Vorm was sent off.

  • Michel Vorm

    1.50

Michel Vorm Flop of the Match

Showed effective distribution but had very little to do throughout in terms of shot stopping. When Cardiff did attack, he was helpless to stop Caulker’s thumping header and was embarrassed in stoppage time as he brought down Campbell and earned himself a red card.

  • Neil Taylor
    1
    1
    2.00

    Neil Taylor

Defended resolutely but looked poor going forward, especially when he sent in panicky shots from range once his side had gone 1-0 down.

  • Chico

    2.50

    Chico

Worked well with Williams at the back but, like his goalkeeper, was rarely tested and could not do anything about Caulker's goal.

  • Ashley Williams

    2.50

    Ashley Williams

Eager to get on the ball throughout, despite a barrage of boos from the home crowd every time he did so. Also defended ably and is showing signs of getting back into his rhythm.

  • Ángel Rangel

    2.50

    Ángel Rangel

Ventured forward regularly down the right side but produced a performance bereft of any pinpoint deliveries. Didn't humiliate himself when he spent a few minutes in goal following Vorm's sending off.

  • Leon Britton
    2
    0
    2.50

    Leon Britton

Kept his side ticking as ever in midfield, though he could have improvised a lot more in the middle of the park. Found himself in Medel's back pocket more often than not.

  • Jonjo Shelvey
    1
    1
    2.50

    Jonjo Shelvey

Exchanged a couple of rash tackles with Medel early on, playing just off Michu in the supporting striker’s role. His contribution was surprisingly limited thereafter.

  • Michu
    2
    0
    2.00

    Michu

Wasted a good chance early on despite controlling the ball in typically superb fashion and failed to affect the game with his usual flair. Was unlucky to come off injured in the second half, though this was hardly the most potent performance of the Spaniard’s Swansea career.

  • Nathan Dyer
    1
    0
    2.50

    Nathan Dyer

His usual energetic self throughout, though his final product was still far from its best. Needs to sort his inconsistent crossing as he is more than capable of winning games when at his peak.

  • Wayne Routledge
    1
    1
    2.50

    Wayne Routledge

Utilized space down the left-hand side from the very early stages and was heavily involved in most of his side’s attacks. Was unable to penetrate the Cardiff defense, however, and came off with a few minutes to go.

  • Jonathan De Guzmán
    1
    1
    2.00

    Jonathan De Guzmán

Looked off the pace throughout, with his usual passing accuracy and dangerous forward runs nowhere to be seen. Will need to show more urgency along with Britton in Swansea’s games to come if the Welsh side are to avoid heading into a lengthy barren run.

Substitutions

Came on in the second half but was wasteful with his passing. Did help his side show slightly more urgency up front, however.
