Player Ratings: Arsenal 2-0 Liverpool

Santi Cazorla's volley and Aaron Ramsey's screamer keep the Gunners at the top of the Premier League and ensure they record a big win against their early-season rivals

  • Wojciech Szczesny

    Wojciech Szczesny

Made one brilliant stop with his foot to deny Toure the equalizer from a Gerrard free-kick, but was otherwise rarely troubled.

  • Bacary Sagna

    3.50

    Bacary Sagna

Outpaced Cissokho to provide the cross for Cazorla's opener and showed great energy at both ends throughout.

  • Per Mertesacker

    Per Mertesacker

A calming influence at the heart of the defense. Predictably unbeatable in the air, though Suarez and Sturridge found space whenever they dropped deep to receive the ball.

  • Laurent Koscielny

    Laurent Koscielny

Generally acquitted himself well against the deadliest strike partnership in the league, although Sturridge made him look silly with one drop of the shoulder in the first half.

  • Kieran Gibbs
    34

    3.00

    Kieran Gibbs

Ensured Flanagan had little to no influence as an attacking presence and got forward well, though his delivery was often poor.

  • Tomas Rosicky

    Tomas Rosicky

His dynamism and tidy passing ensured Arsenal comfortably won the midfield battle, even if he rarely threatened the goal himself.

  • Mikel Arteta

    Mikel Arteta

Suarez inevitably found pockets of space in and around him, but he broke up attacks well and set Sagna running down the right for Cazorla's opener.

  • Mesut Özil

    3.50

    Mesut Özil

His influence is often understated as he flits in and out of the game, but he always oozes class and lifts those around him. More than played his part as the Gunners confidently dominated possession in the first half, and played a lovely dink into Ramsey to set up the Welshman's screamer after the break.

  • Aaron Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey Top of the Match

Not at his rampant best, but always had the Liverpool defense on edge and made sure he did something sensible whenever he couldn't do something amazing. Lit up the evening with a sensational strike to double his side's lead on the hour. Out of nothing this appears to be shaping up to be his season.

  • Santi Cazorla
    52
    1
    3.50

    Santi Cazorla

Didn't touch the ball as frequently as he is accustomed, but his runs from deep made him Arsenal's chief goal threat and he showed superb persistence and composure to follow up his own header with the opener.

  • Olivier Giroud
    38
    11
    3.50

    Olivier Giroud

Led the line brilliantly with strength, intelligence and technique. Not afforded many chances, but some of his lay-offs were Ozil-esque and gave his midfielders opportunities to do damage. Missed a golden chance to double his side's lead after the break.

Substitutions

  • Thomas Vermaelen

    Thomas Vermaelen

Came on for Gibbs on 78 minutes to shackle Moses, and did his job.

  • Monreal

    2

    Monreal

Replaced Rosicky with 18 minutes left as Wenger sought to protect his lead, and performed solidly.

  • Carl Jenkinson

    Carl Jenkinson

Introduced in place of Cazorla in the dying minutes.

  • Simon Mignolet

    9
    2.50

    Simon Mignolet

Overcame some dodgy kicking early on and was generally solid. Could do nothing to stop either of Cazorla's efforts which led to the opener, or Ramsey's screamer.

  • Kolo Toure
    4
    16
    2.50

    Kolo Toure

Typically cultured on the ball and unlucky to be denied a goal against his former club by a superb Szczesny save. Caught out for Cazorla's goal and a slow reaction created a gilt-edged chance for Giroud.

  • Mamadou Sakho
    7
    7
    3.00

    Mamadou Sakho

Showed good physicality and tenacity in one-on-one duels, and was not directly responsible for either Arsenal goal.

  • Aly Cissokho
    2
    20
    1.00

Aly Cissokho Flop of the Match

Left for dead by Sagna in the build-up to Arsenal's opener and looked drained of confidence and off the pace from then on. Hauled off at the interval.

  • Martin Skrtel
    7
    5
    3.00

    Martin Skrtel

Forced Giroud to do most of his work with his back to goal and was powerless to prevent both Arsenal goals.

  • Jon Flanagan
    4
    11
    1.50

    Jon Flanagan

One of the finest performances of his young career came at the Emirates in August 2011, but this occasion appeared a little too much for him. Couldn't deal with Arsenal's attacking movement and couldn't influence the game going forward.

  • Steven Gerrard
    6
    10
    2.50

    Steven Gerrard

One of his typically excellent set-piece deliveries set up Liverpool's best chance for Toure, but he was otherwise a peripheral figure.

  • Jordan Henderson
    6
    13
    3.00

    Jordan Henderson

Solid rather than spectacular - first in central midfield, then at right wing back - but couldn't prevent the Gunners dominating possession until they had scored the goals they needed.

  • Lucas Leiva
    2
    8
    2.00

    Lucas Leiva

Had too many creative midfielders to deal with to be an effective shield in front of his defense. Not his best day.

  • Luis Suárez
    16
    7
    3.50

    Luis Suárez

A huge threat all evening, brimming with purpose, trickery and imagination. Will feel justifiably aggrieved that his quick free-kick was not allowed to stand, and hit the post with one clever effort from a tight angle. Showed no hangover from his failed attempts to engineer a move to north London in the summer, though he did spurn a very good chance in the closing minutes.

  • Daniel Sturridge
    11
    10
    2.50

    Daniel Sturridge

A willing runner all game, but most of what he tried failed to come off and, starved of possession, his teammates could not provide the service he requires.

Substitutions

  • Coutinho
    19
    4
    3.00

    Coutinho

His introduction at the interval immediately preceded Liverpool's best spell of sustained pressure in the match, but then Ramsey's brilliance took the game away from them.

  • Victor Moses
    6
    7

    Victor Moses

Replaced Flanagan on 68 minutes but the damage was already done.
