The spoils are shared on the opening day as goals from Steven Whittaker, Ross Barkley, Seamus Coleman and Ricky van Wolfswinkel made for an entertaining second half

    John Ruddy

Relatively untroubled in the first half, having to make only one save, but Mirallas' shot flew just wide. Had no chance with Barkley's powerful equalizer, but perhaps could have done better with Jelavic's shot for the second.

    Russell Martin

Made a good block from Mirallas' effort after 25 minutes. Booked for a silly body-check just before halftime. Could have been tighter on Jelavic ahead of the second goal.

  • Steven Whittaker

    Steven Whittaker

Gifted possession to Pienaar on the edge of the area, but was lucky to see the shot balloon over. Broke the deadlock with an unusual goal, struggling past a couple of challenges to bend an effort against the post, following up from a narrow angle. Hit an awful volley at goal that fortunately set up their equalizer.

    Michael Turner

Stuck tightly to Jelavic, giving the striker few chances to turn or trouble in the opening 45 minutes, but could have done more in the second half.

    Javier Garrido

His second debut for the club after making his loan move permanent this summer. Struggled at times against Mirallas and Coleman, who really came into the game in the second half.

Bradley Johnson Flop of the Match

Paired with Howson to sit and protect the defense, but was ineffective in breaking up Everton's hold on the game, particularly in the first half.

    Jonny Howson

Didn't offer much of note, with Everton's midfield afforded plenty of room in the first 45 minutes.

  • Wesley Hoolahan

    Wesley Hoolahan

Didn't see as much of the ball as he would have liked, and perhaps held onto it for too long when he did get possession. Spread the ball nicely to Whittaker for the opening goal.

Struggled to get into the game, with Redmond looking much more effective.

    Nathan Redmond

Looked lively early on, finding Van Wolfswinkel with a cross, and showed confidence on the ball that the rest of the team lacked. He cut in well to find Whittaker, whose sliced shot was headed home to make it 2-2.

  • Ricky van Wolfswinkel

    Ricky van Wolfswinkel

Saw an early header glance off Distin and drift wide. Didn't get much of the ball in the first half, but threatened and caused trouble with his running. Quiet in the second half, until a comically sliced volley came his way. The striker expertly guided his header past Howard, showing his class.

    Tim Howard

Had to be alert with Van Wolfswinkel running onto a through ball, but came out quickly and put in a great sliding tackle to avert the danger. Could do nothing about the opening goal, and was left rooted to the spot as Van Wolfswinkel headed home.

  • Leighton Baines

    Leighton Baines

His deliveries are always dangerous, and he had plenty of opportunities to get them in the box from corners. Was a lot quieter in the second half, though.

    Phil Jagielka

Had a half-chance with a volley from a corner, but was off-balance and skied it. Slightly guilty of ball-watching as Van Wolfswinkel equalized, but a decent performance otherwise.

Ross Barkley Top of the Match

Showed some good touches and imaginative passing to get out of tight spots, and was the only real source of inspiration for the Toffees. Saw a rasping drive fly wide late in the first half. Stung Ruddy's palms with an effort in the second half before netting a stunning equalizer with his left foot.

Dictated the tempo in the first half as the visitors dominated the ball, but didn't offer much in the way of incision.

    Steven Pienaar

Had the first effort of the game, but snatched at it and it flew over. Spread the play nicely when cutting in from the left, but offered little as the game progressed.

  • Seamus Coleman

    Seamus Coleman

Offered a good outlet on the right side, getting forward often. His deliveries in the first half were mixed, but found Mirallas well for a chance in the first half, and did well to cut in and find Barkley for the equalizing goal, and followed up nicely to put Everton ahead.

  • Marouane Fellaini

    Marouane Fellaini

Played the holding role for the hosts, linking up nicely with Baines, but a quiet game for the midfielder.

    Nikica Jelavic

Shackled well, but managed to hold off a challenge to find Mirallas for the only real chance of the first half. Good movement and a decent effort forced the second goal for Martinez's side.

Came close with a quarter of the game gone, firing an effort wide after good link up play with Jelavic, before seeing another shot blocked minutes later. Hit the side-netting early in the second half.
