Palmeiras 1-2 Club Tijuana: Jürgen Klinsmann watches Xolos advance to Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

Club Tijuana became the third Mexican club to win in Brazil in the Copa Libertadores, advancing past Palmeiras into the quarterfinals.

Following a scoreless draw in the first leg, Club Tijuana beat Palmeiras 2-1 in Brazil to progress to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals.

In 32 prior attempts, Mexican clubs had won in Brazil three times in the Copa Libertadores. Tijuana joined giants Club America and Chivas as the only Liga MX teams to achieve the feat.

U.S. national team coach Jürgen Klinsmann was in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to watch. Americans Edgar Castillo and Joe Corona started the match.

After 20 minutes, fullback Castillo picked up a booking. When Charles lightly laid a hand on him, Castillo crumbled to the pitch, holding his cheek. The referee decided to caution both players.

The best chance of the early going came a few minutes later, when Ayrton clanked a free kick off the underside of the bar.

But the Xolos took the lead before half hour mark. Joe Corona and Fidel Martinez combined at the top of the box to find Duvier Riascos. The Colombian striker took a tame shot which deflected off a defender and trickled toward goalkeeper Bruno. Somehow Bruno contrived to let the ball slip through his grasp and into the net.

In the three previous Copa Libertadores home matches, Palmeiras had only conceded once. Bruno was named man of the match in the first leg against Tijuana.

With yellow cards flowing quickly, Richard Ruiz earned a booking by elbowing Kleber as they both went up for a ball. Venezuelan ref Juan Soto initially showed Ruiz a yellow and then a red, but after conferring with his assistants recognized that Ruiz had not earned an earlier booking. Ruiz remained on the field and Palmeiras took a free kick.

Soto handed out eight cautions in the first half.

A handful of minutes into the second half, Tijuana doubled its advantage. Javier Gandolfi dumped a long free kick into the box and Henrique cleared a header out through the middle. It only made it as far as Fernando Arce. The Mexican midfielder one-timed the ball out of the air, executing a side-volley from outside the box to put the match out of the Brazilians' reach.

Tijuana scored its first two shots on goal.

After an hour, the host finally broke through. The ball deflected off the arm of Pablo Aguilar in the box and the referee whistled for a penalty. Souza, who came on as a substitute at halftime, took a long run-up and sent Cirilo Saucedo the wrong way.

In the 68th minute, a minute after Corona made way for Jose Madueña, Kleber put the ball in the back of the net. The Brazilian striker directed a diving header past Saucedo, but the referee disallowed it for offside. Replays indicated that the goal probably should have stood.

Aguilar picked up a second yellow with five minutes left in regulation time, and the Xolos held on with 10 men.

Tijuana will meet Atlético Mineiro, which features Ronaldinho, in the quarterfinals.
