    Diego López Rodríguez

After a relatively quiet first half the Spaniard kept up his concentration for the second period. Got the slightest of touches on Lewandowski's 50th-minute shot which then came back off the bar and then denied Gundogan with a super save after the hour mark.

  • Raphaël Varane
    337

    Raphaël Varane

The young Frenchman replaced Pepe who struggled to deal with Lewandowski in the first leg and he proved a more than capable deputy. He looked very sharp as he read the play superbly to stave off any danger.

  • Sergio Ramos
    416
    113
    3.50

    Sergio Ramos

He did his best to disrupt Lewandowski by getting very physical with him and it seemed to work. He provided a threat in the opposing area and lashed in a goal in the closing stages, but it proved to be not enough.

  • Fabio Coentrao
    122
    216
    3.00

    Fabio Coentrao

Did his best to get forward and support Ronaldo on the left but was guilty of being caught out of position in the process a few times. He was rash when going in for the challenge and was lucky not to see red in the first half.

  • Mesut Özil
    144
    332
    3.00

    Mesut Özil

Hugely threatening in the opening stages, finding space and unlocking the BVB defence at will. He missed a glorious chance to open the scoring in the 15th minute and vanished until popping up with a great assist for Benzema late on.

  • Xabi Alonso
    93
    315
    2.50

    Xabi Alonso

Did not quite display his brilliant passing ability from midfield and was outshone by Modric. His work ethic was not at its highest as he showed no urgency to close down the opposition when they had the ball.

  • Michael Essien
    277
    126
    3.00

    Michael Essien

Had a simple start as Madrid put BVB under pressure from the off. As Dortmund began to get a foothold in the game, though, he was sloppy in possession but a late block kept Lewandowski out and kept his team's hopes alive.

  • Luka Modric
    718
    102
    3.50

    Luka Modric

Used the ball well in midfield, passing accurately or providing his team with an attacking injection from deep when it was needed. But when he was without the ball he made a few clumsy challenges that broke the momentum.

  • Ángel Di María
    195
    224
    3.00

    Ángel Di María

Dropped off the play and got his head up, consistently looking to pick out his team-mates with a ball into the centre. He ran at the defence throughout and always looked to have them on the back foot.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    201
    539
    2.50

Cristiano Ronaldo Flop of the Match

Should have made more of two decent opportunities early on, one of which was sent straight at Weidenfeller from close range. His touch deserted him for the remainder of the game as he failed to penetrate the Dortmund back line.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín
    82
    412
    2.50

    Gonzalo Higuaín

The Argentine striker put himself about in the final third but lacked the pace to truly worry the opposition. He struggled to find space where it mattered and missed his best chance to score with just four minutes gone.

Substitutions

  • Sami Khedira
    190
    156
    3.00

    Sami Khedira

Came on for Alonso in the 67th minute to add more dynamism to the midfield, which he did so effectively by providing an additional runner from deep.

  • Kaká
    459
    99
    3.00

    Kaká

Brought on in place of Coentrao in the 57th minute did well to orchestrate the play in a heavily-congested central area in Dortmund's half.

  • Karim Benzema
    500
    70
    3.50

    Karim Benzema

Replaced Higuain in the 57th minute and was alert to get in the right place to score the opening goal with seven minutes remaining. He then kept a cool head to supply a cutback for Ramos to add the second.

  • Roman Weidenfeller
    314
    63
    3.50

    Roman Weidenfeller

A solid performance from the keeper as he stayed big and positioned himself well to keep out Higuain in the fourth minute. He then denied Ronaldo from close range soon after and claimed almost everything he went for in the area.

  • Neven Subotic
    202
    94
    3.00

    Neven Subotic

Was dragged out of position early on but quickly regained his composure. He held the defensive line brilliantly to stop Madrid from running in behind and he was also there to mop up whenever they threatened. Could have closed Ramos in the area as he slammed in the second.

  • Mats Hummels
    277
    62
    3.50

    Mats Hummels

Having acclimatised to the early Madrid pressure, the centre-back repelled everything with a series of interceptions and aerial challenges. Along with Subotic he restricted the space in the channels for the hosts to run in.

  • Lukasz Piszczek
    307
    57
    3.50

    Lukasz Piszczek

A typically tireless performance from the right-back as he raced up and down the flank. Always seemed to be there to provide an option of additional width but also managed to stay on top of his defensive duties.

  • Marcel Schmelzer
    119
    99
    2.50

    Marcel Schmelzer

Started the game apprehensively and almost gifted Madrid a fourth-minute goal when he was caught in possession. He did not look entirely comfortable with the ball at his feet and was reluctant to push on and help unpick Essien.

  • Sven Bender
    128
    96
    3.00

    Sven Bender

Unable to keep hold of the ball when required, enabling Madrid to keep up the pressure on his side. However, he tracked the ball well through the middle and accurately judged his tackles when in dangerous areas.

  • Ilkay Gündogan
    281
    119
    4.00

Ilkay Gündogan Top of the Match

Slow to close the play as Madrid dominated the early exchanges. However, he provided his team with much-needed relief by slowing the tempo when on the ball and was only denied a goal by a remarkable save from Diego Lopez.

  • Mario Götze
    85
    143

    Mario Götze

Was forced off through injury after just 14 minutes and thus was unable to impact the game.

  • Marco Reus
    297
    63
    3.50

    Marco Reus

Used his pace to good effect as he glided past the opposition with ease. He was moved to a more central position following Gotze's withdrawal and flitted about in spaces that regularly concerned the Blancos' defence.

  • Jakub Blaszczykowski
    217
    81
    3.00

    Jakub Blaszczykowski

Was not involved in the opposing half anywhere near enough as he did not spend time on the ball to influence proceedings until late on. Nevertheless, he helped out defensively all night.

  • Robert Lewandowski
    328
    123
    3.50

    Robert Lewandowski

The Polish striker kept a cool head despite plenty of provocation but was unable to finish a series of chances, his closest one coming back off the bar.

Substitutions

  • Felipe Santana
    97
    66

    Felipe Santana

Replaced Bender in the 91st minute to help stop Madrid from netting a decisive third.

  • Sebastian Kehl
    93
    71

    Sebastian Kehl

Brought on in place of Lewandowski in the 87th minute as Klopp looked to add some additional defensive steel.

  • Kevin Großkreutz
    118
    95
    3.00

    Kevin Großkreutz

Came on earlier than he would have expected when he replaced Gotze in the 14th minute. He worked hard but lacked the composure to pick out the killer pass that would have put a team-mate through one-on-one.
