Peru 0-0 Mexico: El Tri remains winless in 2013

Playing with a lineup of domestic players, the Mexicans played to a draw for the fifth time in five games during the calender year.

Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre will be looking for answers after watching Mexico play to yet another draw following a 0-0 result against Peru in a friendly at Candlestick Park on Wednesday night.

Angel Reyna missed a penalty kick in the second half that symbolizes the frustration El Tri is feeling after a slow start to the calendar year.

Mexico hasn't won a game in 2013 after breezing through last year's CONCACAF World Cup qualifying semifinal stage. The nation currently sits in fifth place in the Hexagonal after three draws, with the top three teams guaranteed a spot in Brazil while the fourth-place squad will play New Zealand in a one-game playoff.

The match featured young talent on both sides with a few veterans tossed into the mix. While star striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez and other European-based players remained with their clubs, coach De la Torre started veterans Pablo Barrera, Maza Rodriguez, Gerardo Torrado and Jesus Corona.

Mexico dominated the first half but lacked any real scoring opportunities. None of El Tri's five shots in the opening 45 minutes hit the target while Peru forced Corona into two saves.

Raul Jimenez had Mexico's best chance of the first half when Torrado found the forward down the right side of the pitch with only goalkeeper Jose Carvallo standing between him and the goal. But Jimenez had to shoot at a strange angle after rounding the 'keeper and hit the side of the post on his attempt.

And all remained quiet until a questionable call by the referee in the 68th minute that put Reyna on the spot for the penalty kick.

Peru defender Christian Ramos was called for a foul on Omar Bravo, who appeared to do a little acting as he fell to the turf. Ramos, who had picked up a yellow card in the first half, was not handed a second card and both teams finished the game with all 11 players on the field.

Reyna shot the ball to the left and José Carvallo made a diving save.

The inexperienced Peru squad started to come on late, with second-half substitutes Christofer Gonzalez and Raul Ruidíaz testing Corona in the final 15 minutes. The South Americans held the ball longer than Mexico in the second half and had five of their six shots on target.

Mexico will try its luck again on May 31 in a friendly against Nigeria in Houston.
