San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 New York Red Bulls: Goonie magic alive and well in 2013

Late heroics from the home team combined with Roy Miller's woeful showing mean the Red Bulls leave California with nothing to show for an early lead.

By Seth Vertelney

The San Jose Earthquakes proved their 2012 late heroics weren't a one-season phenomenon, as two late goals propelled them to a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls at Buck Shaw Stadium.

In a match that was mostly dull, a wild final 10 minutes turned a snoozer into a memorable affair.

After San Jose had spurned a couple early chances, the Red Bulls bagged the game's first goal with their first real chance. Thierry Henry floated a cross which was deflected into the path of Eric Alexander, who sidefooted a volley home at the back post.

As San Jose's attack sputtered, head coach Frank Yallop introduced rookie forward Adam Jahn, who would go on to have a night to remember.

First, he struck the equalizer on 83 minutes, cropping up at the back post to get a flying foot on Sam Cronin's fantastic ball across the face of goal. Minutes later, his header struck Roy Miller's outstretched arm in the box to give the home side a penalty.

If Miller's penalty concession was bad, what followed was simply disastrous. Chris Wondolowski's spot kick was saved by Luis Robles, but Miller wandered several steps into the box prior to the penalty, forcing a re-take. Given a second chance, Wondo made no mistake, and just like they did so many times in 2012, the Earthquakes stole a late victory.
