The Argentine converted a penalty and chipped the keeper as his team kept its dim playoff hopes alive.
After an hour of scoreless play, Columbus put one in the back of the net. Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles was called for a foul on Chad Marshall, and Federico Higuain converted the penalty in the 62nd minute.
Higuain netted a second in the 76th minute, taking a pass from Will Trapp, running down the right, and chipping Robles from outside the box.
The loss ends a four-game unbeaten run for New York, and marks the end of a three-match losing skid for the Crew.
