Jonny Steele and Lloyd Sam each notched a goal and an assist as the Red Bulls surged to first in the Eastern Conference.
New York claimed the advantage in the 27th minute through Jonny Steele. Latching onto Dax McCarty's through ball, he cut inside and behind the Sporting defense, finishing with a powerful strike past Jimmy Nielsen.
Kei Kamara equalized just before halftime. Soony Saad's close header was parried by Luis Robles' fine reflex save, but he didn't hold it, allowing Kamara to do the easy work and stick it in from point blank range.
The Red Bulls stepped up a gear after halftime. Fabian Espidola bagged a goal off an assist from Lloyd Sam in the 63rd minute, and Sam went from creator to capitalizer six minutes later to make it 3-1 with a counterattacking goal, this time with Steele providing the assist following some fine distribution from Robles.
Kansas City managed a late second, with Dom Dwyer heading in Kamara's cross, but it wasn't enough to overturn the decision.
It wasn't all roses for New York though, as head coach Mike Petke was ejected late in stoppage time.
The result is the second straight loss for KC, while NY extends its unbeaten run to four games.
