Columbus Crew 3-0 D.C. United: Scoreboard catches fire

Mike Stobe

The Columbus Crew rode three first-half goals to a tidy win over visiting D.C. United, which has the worst record in the league.

The Columbus Crew beat D.C. United, 3-0, on Saturday.

A fire in the speaker cabinet of the scoreboard delayed the game 50 minutes as the Columbus Fire Department had to put it out. There were no injures. Once the match did start, Columbus didn't waste much time rushing to the lead.

A quarter hour in, Eddie Gaven sent a cross into the box. Jairo Arrieta reached behind him to collect possession and then fizzed the ball across the goalmouth. Dominic Oduro made the run at the far post to push the ball over the line.

Ten minutes later, Josh Williams tamely connected with a Federico Higuain corner kick with his right foot. The ball bounced once past Bill Hamid.

In first half stoppage time, Brandon McDonald bundled over Arrieta from behind in the box after a nifty Gaven back pass. Higuain scored the penalty.
After a run of five straight losses, D.C. United has the worst record in MLS, with four points from eight games.
