Javier Morales scored a rare header to lead Real Salt Lake to a 1-0 win over visiting Chivas USA.
"I really felt like that was one of the most complicated games I’ve coached against," RSL coach Jason Kreis said. "Some of the tactical positions that they were making were stuff that we just don’t see in our league too often. In our league, we don’t see teams come and try to be that aggressive as they were here."
Midway through the first half, Ned Grabavoy handled a deflected Chivas USA corner. Nick Rimando made a diving save to push Edgar Mejia's penalty away and keep the game goalless.
"I kept on second guessing myself on PKs leading up to this one today," Rimando said. "I kind of stuck to my guns and really committed to myself to go to my left. He kind of opened up early and I was there for the save."
RSL opened the scoring early in the second half. Javier Morales collected an errant pass in his own half and started a flowing move that ended up with Alvaro Saborio on the right side of the Chivas USA box. Saborio crossed and Morales peeled off his marker to head home unmarked.
In the fourth minute of stoppage, Mejía was ejected. Additionally, Bobby Burling picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and will sit out a game with suspension.
"I think if you didn’t enjoy watching that game," Jason Kreis said, "you probably think about not watching soccer anymore because these were two teams that just went at it."
