New York Red Bulls 0-1 Sporting Kansas City: Woes under Mike Petke continue

Sporting Kansas City jumps to the top of the Eastern Conference after another woeful offensive performance by the New York Red Bulls under rookie head coach Mike Petke.

HARRISON, N.J. -- Good thing the fans didn't show up to Red Bull Arena for this one.

An early goal from Aurélien Collin set up by a corner from United States international Graham Zusi in the 13th minute was all that was needed in a tight 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls in front of only 12,000 for the midweek game.

Armed with Major League Soccer's highest payroll at over $12 million, the New York Red Bulls continued to show their offensive ineptitude, missing several chances to equalize. Red Bulls captain Thierry Henry blanked on the easiest chance of the game, as a through-ball freed the French striker on a one-on-one with Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. Henry had the right side of goal open but his toe-tapped shot sailed just past the goalposts.

After several missed opportunities, frustrations started to boil over for the Red Bulls. In the 90th minute, former Lyon midfielder Juninho received a red card after directly kicking a ball into the chest of Nielsen, frustrated by the Dane's time wasting. A few boos reigned on the Red Bulls after the match and with Red Bull soccer global director Gerard Houllier in house, pressure is beginning to mount on rookie head coach Mike Petke.
