The first match of the Rocky Mountain Cup ended in a 1-1 draw, with Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids each taking a point.
The visiting Rapids opened the scoring late in the first half. Deshorn Brown stripped Chris Schuler of the ball and drilled a low shot past Nick Rimando. The goal marked the rookie's first in MLS.
Salt Lake, which held nearly 70 percent of possession and tried 25 crosses, finally equalized 10 minutes from time. Luis Gil blocked an attempted pass that scooted forward into the box. Joao Plata played a tiny slide-rule pass to his right, and Alvaro Saborio thunked the ball home from a near impossible angle.
Of concern for the Rapids will be goalkeeper Matt Pickens, who broke his right forearm seven minutes into the game and was replaced by Clinton Irwin.
