The two-time defending champs chase a treble of MLS Cups with the first step coming against the visiting Fire.

- This match kicks off the 2013 season for each of these teams. LA Galaxy won the MLS Cup last year. The Chicago Fire made the postseason but fell to eventual finalist Houston at the first hurdle.
- Landon Donovan will miss the beginning chunk of this season on an extended sabbatical. He is currently in Cambodia. Robbie Keane will captain the Galaxy this year.
- David Beckham left Los Angeles after his second MLS Cup, joining Paris Saint-Germain. Former Chelsea and Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini will replace Josh Saunders between the sticks.
- The Fire lost former Mexican internationals Pavel Pardo (retirement) and Guillermo Franco (option declined). Alvaro Fernandez and Dominic Oduro also left. Their replacements are MLS veterans Jeff Larentowicz, Maicon Santos and Joel Lindpere.
- LA striker Jose Villarreal will miss this game representing the United States in the U-20 CONCACAF Championship.
