Ghost goals, comebacks and titles: Top 10 Man Utd - Spurs clashes
6. Sheringham misses penalty on United debut
Date: August 10, 1997 - Tottenham 0-2 Manchester United
Spurs opened a Premier League season with a home game for the first time, while Teddy Sheringham made his Red Devils debut, against the side he had just left.
The England man was jeered constantly, but had a golden chance to silence the White Hart Lane boo-boys on the hour as United were awarded a penalty and he stepped up to take it.
However, the crowd looked on in glee as Sheringham's effort hit the post, keeping the scores level at 0-0.
United had the last laugh, though, with two goals in a minute from Nicky Butt and a Ramon Vega own-goal, securing an opening day victory.
